Just wanted to let everyone on here know that Zalma placed third in the Woodland Volleyball Tournament tonight! We were seeded fifth and knocked off two teams that were seeded higher than us. The girls fought really hard and represented their school and community well. It would be nice to see more support for them from parents and fans at their games because they are a great bunch of girls and have a lot of talent and potential. Congratulations once again to Coach Wiseman and Coach Huffman and all the Lady Bulldogs!

The scores were as follows:
ZALMA 14, 25, 25
MEADOW HEIGHTS 25, 11, 17

ZALMA 18, 15
LEOPOLD 25, 25

ZALMA 19, 25, 25
WOODLAND 25, 17, 22

Be sure to come out to support the Lady Bulldogs this Tuesday, September 8 at their first home game of the season as they take on the Bell City Lady Cubs.(Only varsity will play because Bell City only has one team). Game starts at 6 p.m. Hope to see you all there!:)

Special congratulations goes out to junior Lesta Newberry (#35) for being the only teammate from Zalma to make the All-Tournament Team, and junior Angela Dickinson (#5) for being the only teammate from Zalma to make the All-Academic Team. Good job, girls!:)

"Say what," Cindy graduated from SEMO in May of this year. She has her teaching degree and is a remedial teacher in elementary now, I think. For somebody who goes to all the girls' practices and gets to see what she does with them, I think Cindy is doing a great job coaching them, and if you were at the ballgame tonight, you would have seen it as Zalma defeated Bell City, a state-ranked team who won third place at state last year. These girls really do have a lot of talent and potential to go far this season. They work so hard in practice and you can tell that they really want to have a great season. What's great is that we have no seniors on the squad this year so next year most of them are going to be seniors and you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be the best they've been. Lesta (Newberry) and Angela (Dickinson) have both improved significantly from last season and they are both hitting stronger and becoming better blockers at the net and their setting is rather exceptional. We have one of the best libero players around, in my opinion, in little Torie VanGennip (a.k.a. Short Stuff) who was picking up nearly all of Bell City's star player Jasmine Johnson's kills tonight, and her sister Lorie VanGennip, who's only a freshman, is an all-around great player whether it's serving, defense, or hitting, you can always count on Lorie to be a solid player. And I'm so glad that Alisha (Hendrix) has returned to Zalma this year; she was greatly missed and you can tell that her presence on the team is just the icing on top of the cake. She's a lefty and she's our secret weapon at confusing the other team at the net! I can't forget to mention the sophomores Trista Clark and Whitney Walker who are still learning but they are giving it their all, and little freshman Jenny Ware would hands down win the Hustling Award if I were to give it out. She never lets a ball drop and isn't afraid to hit the floor. I think this may very well be one of the best volleyball squads to come out of Zalma since Carl Ritter took us to state back in the 90s and that's something to be proud of, especially for such a small school and town like we have. You may not like Cindy as a person but don't question her ability to coach; she is working these girls like crazy in practice to push and push to become a better team.

I also want to say THANK YOU to the wonderful turnout we had at tonight's game. The gym was nearly packed full of Zalma parents and fans and it was nice to see so many of the high school kids there as well cheering on the girls. Trust me, for any team around here to be able to say "We beat Bell City" is an excellent thing. Once again, congratulations to Coach Wiseman, Coach Huffman and all the Lady Bulldogs for all the hard work and effort you are giving and for your excellent win tonight over the state-ranked Bell City Lady Cubs!!! Scores were 25-23, 25-20. Our record improves to 3-1, now.

And keep up the support, Zalma Bulldogs fans! Our next game is Thursday, September 10 against Marquand-Zion. It will also be our junior varsity's first game, some be sure to make the special trip to Marquand and support all of our girls!:) Game starts at 6 p.m. Hope to see you all there!
