Ex-East Feliciana Juror gets prison time

There are 2 comments on the www.2theadvocate.com story from Jun 29, 2010, titled Ex-East Feliciana Juror gets prison time. In it, www.2theadvocate.com reports that:

A former East Feliciana Parish police juror accused of hitting a former girlfriend with a small board and his fist, fracturing her face, was sentenced to one year in prison Monday.

State District Judge Tony Marabella immediately remanded Chris Ferguson Sr. to the custody of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office for transfer to the state Department of Corrections.

Marabella, who sentenced Ferguson, 36, to five years at hard labor but suspended all but one year, also ordered him to pay $3,300 in restitution to the victim for her medical expenses.

Ferguson, who resigned from the Police Jury after pleading guilty Feb. 22 to a second-degree battery charge, will be on active supervised probation for five years upon his release from prison.

Ferguson declined Marabella’s invitation to speak before he was sentenced.

Ferguson’s attorney, Anthony Long, asked the judge to put Ferguson — who had no prior criminal record — on probation rather than send him to prison.

Marabella cited the seriousness of Ferguson’s crime and said, “The court doesn’t think straight probation is appropriate."

An East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy testified last fall that he was dispatched to a home on Martha Drive in Zachary on Aug. 23, 2008, and found a bloodied and crying woman inside, as well as blood on the living room floor and in a bathroom sink.

The deputy said the woman, whose face was swollen, told him Ferguson had knocked her unconscious.

The woman said she and Ferguson had lived together as boyfriend and girlfriend but had recently split up, the deputy testified.

Ferguson, of Jackson, was elected to the Police Jury in November 2007.

The Police Jury on March 1 appointed former juror Julius Kennerson to replace Ferguson. An election for the seat formerly held by Ferguson will be held Oct. 2.

Once Ferguson Sr. pleaded guilty he had no choice but to resign. Cobb will have to resign when he is found guilty or enters a guilty plea. The decent thing would be if he resigned now!!!!
