Fifteen men and women from Oklahoma City were in a recent Appropriations Committee meeting, Oklahoma State Senate. We went to the Capitol to oppose a Senate bill being heard for the first time. It came time for debate, so I raised my hand to speak on behalf of those of us who cared enough to attend this public meeting.
But I was silenced by Senator Mike Johnson, committee Co-Chair, who represents Canadian, Kingfisher, and Logan Counties. He explained later that I could not participate in my government because of “the rules.”

During my 10 years as a member of the Oklahoma House of Rebresentatives, I never saw such a dictatorial practice executed during any committee meeting. If the Senate “rules” shut Oklahomans out of the process, those rules are wrong!

I don’t believe that I have ever been angrier or more ashamed of my government.
