First, "atheist" is defining ourselves by what we're not (believers in a supernatural being who created the universe). There are a lot of things I'm *not,* but I don't base my identity, or sense of self, on those things.
Second, the religious majority that we find ourselves living among have made a simple, descriptive term, into an insult (in their own minds).
Third, I think a positive term (describing what one *is* rather than what they're *not*) makes a discussion less confrontational, and gives the discussion direction.
What is your preferred label, and why?
Rationalist is good.

I also like realist.

A funny but accurate one could be truthest (or truthist), but the religious liars-by-habit wouldn't get or understand that one. They are so conditioned by the constant repetition of their beloved lies, that they can no longer differentiate between reality and bullshyt.

Unbeliever is a good descriptive term, if someone asks you what you mean by rationalist, but it's back to what you are not, instead of what you are.

Still, unbeliever has less baggage than atheist does.

angel.........semantics doesn't change anything. Believing that man arose from nothing without help is totally irrational.

Good idea it works so well in other scenarios like in politics.

Progressive instead of socialist, Marxist or communist.

We understand that it's 30 seconds in your busy life, that you simply can't spare? We people of leisure have that 30 seconds, and can afford to let it waste away, without causing ourselves any pain at all.

I prefer 'Terry'... I'm 'Dad' to my children... and 'Bumpa' to my granddaughter.

When it comes to a label defining myself should someone ask...'rational thinker or realist' works and I've also used 'atheist'. Although, when I have used 'atheist' it was usually because I knew it would get a rise out of the particular person that asked.

I dont think you understand the meaning of semantics.

seˇmanˇtics
səˈmantiks/
noun
noun: semantics; noun: logical semantics; noun: lexical semantics

1.
the branch of linguistics and logic concerned with meaning. There are a number of branches and subbranches of semantics, including formal semantics, which studies the logical aspects of meaning, such as sense, reference, implication, and logical form, lexical semantics, which studies word meanings and word relations, and conceptual semantics, which studies the cognitive structure of meaning.

angel you conveniently left out the most important part of my statement that man could not have come from nothing without God. You, on the other hand, apparently believe that things popped into existence from nothing with no help from anything. Do you honestly not see how this is impossible? I suppose you think aliens did it? You claim to be a rational thinker but being an atheist is one of the most dumb belief systems a person could ever have. Of course you don't realize this I know. You are still searching for yourself or something

No one that is atheist, agnostic, humanist etc. has EVER said that anything popped into existance from nothing. This is in stark contrast to what every atheist I have ever met belives.

Something came from nothing is the belief of RELIGION.
ISLAM, JUDISM, CHRISTIANITY
they all say "something came from nothing."

this is NOT AT ALL AN ATHEIST VIEW

You do know what you are rattling your head about, don't you? Is it, that you just don't have the 30 seconds to spare, or is mastering that "reply" button and managing to register truly beyond your intellectual abilities?

If you can have someone else create for you a cheat sheet with all the pertinent data on it, you just might be able to register on topix in that 15 seconds of attention span that you have. Or walk into any park, hand your phone over to any 10 year old and the child will get you registered in 60 seconds or less. It will probablly cost you a buck or two, but you will easily be able to keep track of your posts.

Had you worded that correctly, you would have written that a god could have not come from nothing, without mankind(the creator of all gods).

Are you trying to argue evolution, atheism or the Big Bang theory?
