Eastern Michigan University is considering a campus-wide smoking ban as the University of Michigan gears up to go smoke-free July 1. But first, there will be a smoke-free test drive.

First off, anyone who is actually worried about someone smoking in the great outdoors either has real issues with the need to control others...or an extreme phobia.

This is a bad idea from the get go, but if they actually do such a thing, they should at least have to make the standard of "no safe level" uniform across the board.

This is only fair if there is to be "equal protection under the law".

This is supposed to be about the right to "smoke free air"...right?

What gives the meat eaters the right to foul the air with their BBQ's as this is offensive to the Vegans.

One should not be allowed to hold one form of smoke to a different standard than all others, or equal protection under the law is meaningless.

As an institution of higher education, this University has a number of tasks.

One is preparing people for the future.

That entails not only providing them with knowledge and technical skills but also preparing them for the situation in which they are going to find themselves.

The university is also responsible for maintaining a reasonably safe and healthful environment, but the relevance of that implication are too obvious to need explanation, even to you.

The reticence of employers to hire smokers is spreading pretty fast. The unwillingness of communities to permit smoking in an increasing number of situations is proliferating even faster.

Failing to enact this sort of regulation on the campus would be failing in the basic responsibility to prepare the students for the life ahead of them.

Still, I find it hilarious that these folks would actually proclaim that they won't take this step if things "don't go smoothly" during the trial period when taking the step is going to make it far less convenient for an addicted minority to get their fixes.

That sounds a lot like challenging smokers to make as much trouble as they can during that two week period, with all the force of addiction behind them.
