It seems the last post was May 2012. I, wonder why they haven't posted anything since. I, believe that if someone wants to help themselves they will do that on there own. People shouldn't talk about ex-cons etc. because it is not worth it. My son is there and he didn't have anything bad to say. Well, everyone should go and see for themselves what is going on. Peace

Daytop Village , in the Bronx is firing counselors to cover up the large amount of mismanagement of funds , the lack of respect for the staff . I was a client there in ( 2012 ) . I witnessed an a/d ( A, Silver ) tell one the better counselors that she controlled his career and that if wasn't loyal to her ( not daytop ) that he would have to be dealt with . Counselors walk around there in fear . Clients can't get the proper treatment do to all of the egos up in that place .

Thank you for your post. I was there from 1990-1993. I am wondering if you were there during that time. From what you are saying, I am so glad that I have already gone through DTV. I never felt like it was not safe during that time. I can only imagine how it is now.

The scandals are endless with both clients and staff. How does one expect to get proper treatment with all of the distractions? Also, with up to 300 clients in each facilty, no one gets the proper attention. Too many "fake" addicts just there to avoid a prison sentence mixed in with "real" addicts needing serious attention.
The Daytop Far Rockaway facilty is a real den of iniquity!

I spent my childhood in Daytop, my Dad was a patient YES my dad is a Heroin Addict, now CLEAN 26 years... Eddie Hill ran my dads house & I witnessed the Chair, Shaved Heads, Signs, Dish Duty... Oh did I mention my Dad oh yeah received every punishment due to his Attitude.. Everything I learned there I held close to my heart and I have helped many Addicts in my life.. Now the Shocker is I myself am sitting here Detoxing from a 3 year run of all pain meds that started from my migraines yet in the end I found my choice of high Percocet... Now being I am on the other side of the fence let me say it Loud & Clear Daytop was a place I would be if it was the way it was in the 1980's but its not nor are any in patient rehabs and the truth is... Clean Addicts need to Run a REHAB not a Book Reading person with a Certificate, not a person who Drinks nor a person who USES anything cause they don't nor ever will know what it is to be the Addict or the Addicts Family... I grew up with it hanging over my head that I am the Junkies Daughter well it's the Truth and I am Proud to be his daughter cause he is clean 26 years, now before anyone thinks I failed my Dad NO I didn't he said it like it is "It can happen to anyone"... We may live in different states but I always know he is a phone call away and if I really need him it's a short plane ride.. My Dad graduated Daytop in 1987 I was 10 years old HE earned his Freedom cause he Embraced his Addiction head on... If I myself could find Eddie Hill I would be sitting with him Speaking, not as the Junkies Daughter but as the Addict, I sat in meetings I shared in meetings as a Kid, now I am a grown woman, mother, & wife...

Hello. I know its been awhile since your post, but I hope you never had to experience Daytop. Most of the replies are not written by dropouts. Daytop is a behavior modification program, not a drug rehab. It teaches nothing of the disease of addiction. They subject you to mass punishments(based on the mistakes of a few), treat you subservient, make you excessively clean and do labor tasks, and keep you months longer than you should be there. It is, however, a good program for ex convicts who have no social and coping skills, and are habitually in jail. If one is looking to get off of drugs, its easier, much easier to go to a detox or crises center, then to a 30 day rehab, and a sober house. And attend na or aa meetings. The disease of addiction is not treatable by behavior modification, but rather by spiritual principles and wanting to stop. Going to Daytop just puts the disease on hold, building strength. And when you get out, you are there, with your disease, stronger than ever. I should know, I completed Daytop, so did many others. It is a nightmare, and just day to day chaos.

I went to Daytop in January 1967. When Swan lake first opened. I was a hopeless dope addict. The philosophy was firm. It was a no nonsense
18 month to 2 year program run by ex addicts . I was there about 90 days when dinner time came I came to realize I had not thought of getting high all day. This was a mirical . My first . That was 47 years ago. What I learned there has stayed with me my whole live .

Thanks for my life Daytop.

wouldnt go there it;s run by excons. They have over 200 beds and only 10 counslers which most of them have a record. They prety much let the residents run the place and they come and go whenever they like. They sneek out at knight and get drugs because there is no security and they dont randum piss test you. If your real searious about quiting dont go there. I totally agree. MY son was just up there and he left after a month. He said it was HORRIBLE! You are right, it is run by ex-cons..He shared a room with 6 PEOPLE!!! what the hell???
I was in Daytop Swanlake. I was sent there by the courts I was on Federal Supervised release. Daytop helped save my life. I learned on how to live life on lifes term. Yes there are con's there, and if your not a convict just look around because that is the long road to recovery. Death, institutions and death. I hated it when I first got there in time I learned alot about myself. Im married have a job pay my rent and enjoy life. That I learned from Daytop. Its not the messenger. Its the message that counts.
