I have never seen such a GROSS waste of TAXPAYERS money, in a small town of approx. 300 people the Mayor, MAYORS SEC., Clerk, City Manager & 4 Police soak these poor people for approx. 750,000 a year. Ever other city in Ga. this size the Mayor gets a $300. a month stypon, a mayors sect. is unheard of and maybe 1 at most police at most, why not add 2 people at the TCSO and let them patrol the city they do anyway..

The official head count is 880 - but you're right; it's a HUGE waste of money and resources even by government standards.

Of the 880, 86.5% are technically eligible to vote however, I suspect the actual number who are registered is much lower. Some, for example, are summer people who vote elsewhere.

Also, 63.5% are age 60 and above! In the county, 30.9% are 65 or older and throughout the state, it's 11% all of which indicates to me that the city population is made up mostly of old-time locals and those in the townhouses on the lake.

It's a cash cow that can't be, or won't be torn down by eligible voters. Commercial property owners can't vote because they don't live in the city limits yet pay the bulk of the taxes. The elderly are not about to change anything that'll disrupt their safe and secure little world.

Then too, the city owns the water and sewer facility which controls growth, or lack thereof, in the entire county. It's a case of the tail (the city) wagging the dog (the county).

LOL! I'd bet that every time a county employee comes out of the courthouse and sees that HUGE refurbished building the city is moving into across the street, they turn green with envy.

Another significant number that indicates the extent of the decay of Hiawassee is that of the 774 housing units within the city limits, 38.9% are vacant for one reason or another!

No numbers are available on the number of commercial units that are occupied or vacant but my guess it's probably around 50%.

Someone has to protect all these vacant homes and businesses from the looters. And the Mexican restaurant would go out of business if it weren't for the city cops.

If it wasn't for them and other local Govt.employees getting paid to sit on their butts and eat,a lot of restaurants would probably go under.

The taxpayers are paying for some of these people to go to City Hall ever day, and stand around on the sidewalk and smoke a carton of cigs. ever day, an one of the cops to follow around after the school bus, what a waste of money, these people are useless as tits on a bore hog...

Have you ever wondered why the city and county, after a decade of doing nothing, all in one year suddenly goes on a building/spending/borrowing spree? There's the new senior center, and the refurbished city hall and the ball fields for the kids. Next will come an expense of probably $150 - 200,000 to refurbish the old senior center into a bigger and better facility for government employees. What ARE they thinking?

Well let's see... the city could continue renting a space for city hall, or, they could purchase a below-cost facility the FDIC repossessed from the failed Bank of Hiawassee... Hmmm, which would serve the citizens of Hiawassee?
explain please

I agree the FDIC purchase was a great move!! But why in the first place did they make the deal on the building they are now in? I also wish someone would justify the cost for a mayor and a city manager/attorney for such a small town. I am not passing judgment, just doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, explain please.

(On second thought its up to the voters of the city. The fact that the last candidate that ran against the mayor did not want any salary seems to make it plain that they really wanted what they had.)

Well, that is a really great question. They had a great deal when city hall was in the old rock jail by the courthouse (FREE RENT) but the city decided to charge the county for water service for the courthouse, so they got booted out!!

It is senseless the City of Hiawassee pays for a Police Dept. The money would be better spent to boost the Towns Co.Sheriffs Office to keep a Deputy in the Hiawassee area. The TCSO seems to be ran more effectively and their Deputies could probably chase someone across a parking lot without having to stop for a snack or a cigarette break.Or,A minimum wage Security Guard could do the same as the PD.
