Unfortunately, TC does not have an adequate program for the gifted program here. They need to start from the bottom up identifying those exceptional students and give them a rigorous program that will stimulate all those students capable of higher level thinking skills. This in turn will, hopefully, help those other students below them to achieve more. They need to raise the BAR for ALL students. Instead they give tons of busy work to the intelligent and others. They don't modify the teaching for various students learning styles and levels. There could be many cooperative learning experiences to help the top and lower levels, more challenged students giving each a much better self image. Yes, ALL CHILDREN,RICH OR POOR , INTELLIGENT and STRUGGLING STUDENTS deserve the BEST POSSIBLE EDUCATION!!! They ALL deserve better!!
This takes a lot of effort and $$$ that I don't think this system is willing to put forth. It takes proper management to put the money in the right direction. Yes sad! Very sad. So if it hasn't worked for sooooo many years why haven't they hired people who DO KNOW WHAT TO DO AND COME FROM SUCCESSFUL & Functioning SYSTEMS???? Time to get rid of those who DON'T PUT THE NEEDS OF OUR CHILDREN FIRST!!!
Learning and experiencing success should be a RIGHT for ALL students.
We can't start at the HS .....Start at the bottom. It is about time that children LOVE GOING TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY , walking away at the end of each day feeling successful and good about themselves! Let's not wait until HS and have students struggling to get into colleges and feeling embarrassed for attending TCHS. Feeling defeated and inferior to students in surrounding communities. How sad!! SHAME ON YOU TOWNS COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM. ALSO, THANK YOU TO THOSE TEACHERS I HAVE SEEN TRY WITH LITTLE SUPPORT FROM OTHERS TO IMPROVE THIS FAILING SYSTEM. It doesn't have to be this way anymore. Students shouldn't be trained to CHEAT...They should be excited to become the best they are capable of becoming honestly and take pride in their accomplishments. No students should be struggling to get a decent score on the SAT or ACT if they are prepared properly in their quality classes. They should be able to walk into those exams and score high. Especially students in the HONORS CLASSES! SAD VERY SAD FOR THOSE CHILDREN OF TOWNS COUNTY THAT ARE BEING ROBBED OF A PROPER EDUCATION!!! LET'S WAKE UP AND STOP BEING THE LOWEST ACHIEVERS IN THE STATE!!! OUR CHILDREN REALLY DESERVE MUCH BETTER !!!
iI have heard these same remarks for years. Nothing changes. TC parents could care less, or most of them anyway. No changes will come with a " oh well" attitude. And, the board knows this. Get used to it or move your kids to private schools, or home school, if possible.

When will she ever let her daughter live her own life and make her own mistakes. Is she afraid she could not HONESTLY become top in her class.
IT IS SO SAD SHE HAS SO LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN HER CHILD. SHE HAS TRAINED HER TO CHEAT HER WAY TO THE TOP. THIS may work in TC. This will not work once she leaves. I guess she already has experienced a taste of this at YHC without someone pulling the strings for her.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO LOVING YOUR CHILDREN WITHOUT CONDITIONS ATTACHED
HOW SAD FOR HER CHILDREN THAT THEY HAVE TO LIVE WITH A PARENT WITH SUCH POOR ETHICS....and so little unconditional love for her children.
I would have thought the MOM would have stopped by now knowing how she is making herself and child the JOKE of TC! Everyone knows and she continues to push on with such unethical behavior for "The Good of herself" and not "THE GOOD OF THE CHILDREN " in TOWNS COUNTY!
Can you imagine what # this child would be in one of the Top Functioning School Systems of Georgia or elsewhere in the country.
Who knows….Maybe she could have had the higher educational standards necessary to succeed and become # 1 without Mom. What a thought TC???? Time to improve the educational system and standards now!! Time to Block the corrupt behavior of a few! The children of TC deserve a better education than they have been given. Get rid of the dead wood and I think this can happen. There are many good teachers and others in the system that are ready for a changes! DO IT NOW!
NO CHILD SHOULD HAVE TO FEEL EMBARRASSED TO HAVE GRADUATED FROM THEIR HS. I feel so sad for the children of this community!!! They don't know what could really be a great education!
My son had Spanish with the Golden girl last year. She came in every morning and copied the extra credit answer then turned it in. The teacher knew it and never said a word. Job scared. You can't blame her. If you take a stand against the wrong people in this town you end up unemployed. If you are part of King Bills army of thugs you and your children can get away with murder.
Don't expect Sheriff Clinton to ever take a stand against the School Board or King Bill. He is just as job scared. He runs to his office every morning after his crossing guard duties are done. That will always be his involvement at the school. He is a high school drop out remember. So if children are abused or teachers commit crimes he believes the kids can just drop out like he did if they don't like it.

This is one of MANY times over the past years .....Years of using her IPHONE to cheat on tests....
Joining clubs and not contributing....Just getting the credit to make her look better.
I hope there is a silence instead of applause when they put her on stage as the Valedictorian!!!

I don't know how many people are aware that THE YEARBOOK is done as an ENGLISH CLASS!!! How many 100's do they get to raise their GPA whether they participate or not!!! How many years can they have English Yearbook instead of a Rigorous and Productive English Class!! Maybe this is why the SAT & ACT scores are below other schools in the surrounding area. Wake up! Who decided on this!!
All students in Towns County Deserve a wonderful English Program so that when they leave Hiawassee they have the confidence to complete a Super Essay composed with style and good grammar! This is one of the major weaknesses of the system. They have English teachers that are willing to do this....Why doesn't anyone listen to them. There was one older English teacher who retired and was great at making sure she covered PROPER GRAMMAR......They let her go!! SO SAD!!!!

In most schools Yearbook is an afterschool CLUB.

I love how they saved money got rid of a half time English teacher that cost the school no benefits and hire one full time and do the same in Science . Maybe the new math teacher came up with a new formula where this saved the system money.

House cleaning needs to be done in all three schools as well as the main office. There are so many employees that are abusing the position. When the board is questioned about specific employees they get so defensive and rude. Parents NEED to stand up for their children...if they don't, who will? Hold these board members, teachers, administrators, and Superintendent accountable. It is sickening to hear what comes out of the mouths of some of the teachers.

The taxpayers need to stand up also. The 16 percent increase in school tax last year was insane in these economic conditions.

<quoted text>The saddest story this year is the number of children who have applied to one of the top four colleges in the State and got turned down because of a low SAT and a GPA that when weighted losses about 30% because the classes are rated so poor at TCHS. I'm told only three students have gotten accepted at what are known as Tier One schools. Two at UGA one at USG/GT. I know of at least five who applied and got turned down.
The rest who want to go to college will be forced to go to Piedmont, YHC, NG, NGT, or one of the other little colleges that charge way to much for the degree value they offer in my opinion.
If parents knew what is going to happen to their children who have A & B averages at TCHS when they apply to good colleges, they would move to Hayesville or a school with a better National ranking. The poor families and children are going to have to settle for a school that will not provide them with the opportunities they deserve because they graduated from a High School that is at the bottom of the list. They will be stuck with the same student loan debt that they would have had at a better school.
Anyone know the two who got into UGA?

I know UGA offers the Valedictorian and Salutatorian some type of scholarship. It's between a boy and girl who are both enrolled at YHC for all but one class at TCHS. Both of them have already been accepted at UGA and several other top schools. So you can get into a real college coming out of TCHS after all. I have not heard who is going to GSU/GT Georgia Southern offers a two year there and two year at GT for engineering I know.

It is definitely possible to get into a top University from TC. You as a parent have to be aware of the deficiencies of the TC school system and design your own best course for your child. As a parent you have to continue to monitor the courses being taken in the HS..........As long as the HS does not offer any AP courses get them into a Dual Enrolled program or Better Yet MOVE ON WHEN READY to show the colleges that your child is capable of meeting the standards of any College and continue to succeed elsewhere even if the student has had the handicap of coming from the deficient TC SCHOOL SYSTEM. Maybe once many parents start pulling their students out of the TC HS and it loses a lot of STATE & FEDERAL FUNDING the TC BD and ADMINISTRATION might wake up and begin to provide more AP courses, offer more rigorous core courses and improve the lower grades and gifted program to improve the system. There are many intelligent students living in Hiawassee. It is not their fault that they are having trouble making SAT scores over 1800. If the school system ever gets their act together this will happen. We need to weed out the corrupt
dead wood and keep those willing to move forward and succeed for the good of our children. PLEASE HELP!!
No one should be saying hurtful comments about the students not being able to make higher SAT and ACT SCORES. IT EMBARRASSES THEM AND deflates their egos. Especially after they are working so hard to overcome their situation. How CRUEL! WE NEED TO REMEMBER WHAT SCHOOL SYSTEM THEY ARE COMING FROM. THERE ARE MANY HARD WORKING STUDENTS IN THE SR & lower grades. THEY NEED TO BE SHOWN MORE RESPECT FOR THEIR EFFORTS TO OVERCOME A SYSTEM THAT NEEDS TO CLEAN UP THEIR ACT! PLEASE BE EMPATHETIC TO THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS DOING THE BEST THEY CAN IN OUR SYSTEM THAT NEEDS MENDING! IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY NO STUDENTS MADE MORE THAN WAS IT 1600 ON THE SAT LAST YR?? MAYBE SCORES ARE IMPROVING??? WOULDN'T THAT BE A POSITIVE FINALLY.
GIVE THOSE STUDENTS THAT HAVE RAISED THE AVERAGE SAT & ACT SCORES CREDIT FOR A JOB WELL DONE GIVEN THE DEFICIENCIES OF THE BOARD , AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR NOT MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICES OF CURRICULUM FOR OUR STUDENTS! The students are not the criminals here. They are only the victims of a truly corrupt, deficient system that only chooses to promote their chosen few.
YES PARENTS MAKE YOUR PRESENCE KNOWN AND BECOME MORE ACTIVE. DEMAND MONTHLY PTSO MEETINGS THAT ALL CAN ATTEND AND CAN PARTICIPATE...NOT JUST A FEW. IT IS ALWAYS MORE SUCCESSFUL HAVING MORE PARENTS INVOLVED AND MAKING THEIR OPINIONS KNOWN. A FEW PEOPLE CANNOT MAKE A SYSTEM CHANGE.......WE HAVE OVER 1200 STUDENTS IN THE SYSTEM.....JUST THINK HOW MANY PARENTS CAN MOVE THIS SYSTEM TO SUCCESS! THINK POSITIVE TAKE ACTION AND BE KIND TO OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE ONLY IN THE TC SYSTEM BY DEFAULT!

You are so right. The children are doing their best to succeed in spite of a horrible school system. This year only two children scored above 1650 on their SAT. 1650 will not get you into UGA or any of the top three schools in the State. Both of the students who did score higher took matters into their own hands and got the help they needed to score higher. They will probably be the top two in their class as well.
Next years class has a child who scored over 1900 but had extensive help from some YHC professors preparing for the SAT. In the class below that a child scored over 2100 on the PSAT I've been told. Again these children are doing the SAT preparation work outside the school system. There is little or no help from within.
Whomever wrote there are three going to major colleges this year is mistaken. I believe the number is two. In a healthy school system 15% to 20 % would be attending tier one schools. The rest of the kids who do wish to continue their education will go to local liberal arts colleges. I think there is one going to a small school on a softball scholarship. A couple are going to Valdosta State which is a better choice than any of the local schools but not a top tier university like UGA, GT, GSU where you are about guaranteed a good job if you obtain a good major and maintain good grades.
I'm not saying going to these little schools are bad. I'm just stating it costs about the same to go there as UGA but the difference in the real world job market is huge. I've heard so many children over the past few years say "I didn't want to go to UGA anyway" The truth is they lacked the SAT or GPA to go and were trying to justify their enrollment in a Get in with any SAT score college.
I'm proud of what the children of the Class of 2013 have accomplished in spite of attending a dysfunctional school. There are many really good kids and a few very bright stars who have succeeded in reaching their goals with little or no help.
Enjoy your last four months. You will find a world of opportunity out there, once you pass the County line. If any of you plan to stay around here after graduation, God Help You.

You know, the truth is our school system is a disaster. We are are held in check by an "old boy's club" mentality. As parents however you have a unique opportunity to improve our community.

You can do it by teaching your children yourself. Weather you opt to home school them, or spend extra time with them on education.

My wife and I knew going in the shortfalls of our school system. We were unable to home school when our children were young, but we always made and extreme effort to educate them.

Our girls turned out to be exceptional people who will contribute much in their lives. Everyone who knows our family understand the unique difficulties we faced in making this happen. It was challenging but worth it.

Each parent has the chance to change the community one child at a time, regardless of how bad the school is. Our children sport an education on par with the best in the nation and have gone on to college and continued to succeed.

Hopefully one day, if they decide to.They will return to Towns County and be involved citizen.

I know every parent loves their children and our proud. However if I opted to post my children's names I am confidant that many would agree how amazing and intelligent they are.

What's sad is I'm currently a senior at the high school. I have a 4.0, have a 4.0 in my YHC classes too, but probably won't be considered to be valedictorian or salutatorian due to all of the meddling the board does. I've honestly been praying that someone who is actually HONEST gets the honor. What does that say about our school?
I'm just glad I'm graduating now because it just keeps getting worse and worse.
