The problem with this town is the total lack of integrity. Stuff like the Superintendent hiring her unqualified friend to be principal, the Commissioner buying junk land from his friend and paying three times to much and dumping sewage into the lake until it is ruined, should make people hide in shame. In Hiawassee people walk around like it never happened.
The Superintendent and her pet principal is a joke, yet they act like everything is normal. Kendall acts like he did the County a favor by purchasing the land at three times its value and now it's sliding off the mountain. The mayor acts like everyone dumps their sewage into the closest lake.
The truth is nobody in the community cares enough to get involved. So, these horrible people continue to abuse their authority. The children continue to receive poor schooling. The taxpayers continue to see their tax dollar wasted. The superintendent continues to hire more administration and lay off teachers.
Then they go to church on Sunday and act like everything is fine. This town is sick.

Most small, socially conservative towns are exactly like Hiawassee/Towns County where government is the largest employer, their actions and economic well-being supercedes the good of the population at large.

Pride, effort, integrity and honesty are not common in Towns County. This territory was settled by Grifters, scam artists, outlaws and criminals running from the law. Read (Living on the Unicoi Road) sometime. It is a glimpse into the quality of people who settled these Mountains. Many bad seeds have sown their crop here. Several other good reads about it out there.

You are wrong money man. Most small communities have more than one or two people willing to take a stand against the corrupt leadership. Honesty, integrity and courage are not inherited trait. They are learned traits. If your parents followed along like sheep to slaughter and looked the other way rather than getting involved, that is what you will do. The circle of life in Towns County. I've watched it longer than most and like most others, didn't get involved. Shame on me.

Interesting, and I'm always willing to learn. How so?

First, I'd question the use of "most." "Some" or "a few" would be more acceptable. "Rarely" would be more like it, IMO.

Regardless, Towns County is excluded. To my knowledge there isn't one individual who publicly takes "a stand" against the conduct of our government, no one, that is, that has the creditability and offers facts and solutions, and is willing to put his identity out there. Rival candidates for office? Sure, but glittering generalities and promises don't count.

There used to be one man who would write long, and I mean LONG, rambling, usually pointless essays for the paper about Towns County government, including the schools,– everything under the sun, but he was a certified fruit loop who would show up at every public gathering, huff and puff, and accuse anyone he didn’t like of something (which was everybody and everything), and he had a habit of jumping in front of every camera to get his picture taken.

He didn’t turn out too well. His name is Stan Raymond.

I’m in complete agreement with you on that. There are two ways to get involved. One, publicly, which doesn’t happen in a small community, if for no other reason than fear of retaliation, of being socially ostracized. The second, by gathering hard facts and sending them to the proper authorities in the proper form without making a public issue of it because, agree with me or not, if one were to “go public” to force change or compliance with what is morally right, right or wrong, he or she would be standing on the steps to the court house alone.

Have a nice day.

You know, Money Man, you make good points. I know several people who would love to step up and get things started in a good direction - but fear retaliation. It sounds like the plot from the movie of the week - but it happens every day in small towns. It's not a lack of integrity. It's fear - plain and simple.

I know a few who work in the schools/government who are sick and tired of the way things are - but cannot afford to lose their jobs and insurance so they keep quiet. It's not just Towns county - it's in every small town in America.

If we look at surrounding towns all but one seem to have it together. Clayton, Blairsville, Hayesville, Blue Ridge, Murphy, Bryson City, Franklin all are thriving. Drive through their downtown's and count the vacant buildings. Read about their schools, attend their festivals. When election time comes there are always several good people running for office. Their School Boards and Commissioners are progressive. Their newspapers are not afraid to point out a problem. They are healthy communities.
I would say Andrews NC was the only community in this region which is on the downslide. Drugs and a lack of tourism dollars and jobs have really taken it's toll. Even they recently voted wet and threw the aldermen who were anti business out of office. They are making an effort to turn the tide. Towns County is last to change and will be last to recover. By the time recovery hits Towns County the US will be cycling into another recession.

I would say Hellawassee.com is about as close as anyone has come to taking a stand in this town. It uses humor to open the eyes of people and calls out some of the villains in this community. It also offers suggestions and hope for the future. The only people I know who disagree or don't like it, are the ones being called out in the story. Write on Hellawassee.

The reason Clayton has Mexicans is because they have work. The area is booming again. If you pulled green cards at the Mexican restaurants here in town you would find we have a problem too. Just not as bad because there is no work here.
If you know something about drug traffic in 441 then report it. Limited access highways have been favored by bootleggers and drug runners forever. Interstates trap them between exits. That is not a Clayton problem.

OMG you mean this area was not settled by people who demand accountability and honesty from their elected officials? You mean the people who settled here were not educated in quality schools and demanded the same for their children? Man, I would have never known if you had not pointed it out. Now I see things clearer. This place is the correct location to insert the tube if the world needs an enema.

When a senior girl at Towns County can get her mom to attempt to change her unsatisfactory YHC grade changed but somehow she's still salutatorian, there's a problem. The reason most kids raised here stay here because this is the only place they can sweep their mistakes under the rug and get off scotch free.

If that happens the guidance counselor, vice principal and her mother will find themselves in a court of law. They already know that. Messing with a child's grade that can affect scholarships and future earnings will prove to be costly for them as individuals.

They will not know the final grades until the colleges report. What they do know is last semester and unless the two current leaders stumble which is unlikely the best she could finish is fourth. The leaders actually take the courses at the colleges not on line where mommy can do the work. If they attempt to alter grades or play games with the weighting they will pay a huge price. The proof is in the SAT score. When the mommies are not there to do the work or beg the grades they fail. The top five have one over 1750, one over 1700, one over 1600 and the other two under 1500. An SAT of 1500 won't come close to getting you into a good school.
