This story is somewhat true. Had it not been the valiant efforts of 25 families along Ridge and Knight Roads and a local firefighter who organized them them into a Fire Brigade and then drafted 3 farmers with tractors and mowers to cut and plow fire lines, this fire would have not been stopped. Fact: The alarm was called in, and twice the departments were dispatched. That's more than 9 minutes of the call. Nothing was coming. The neighbors did as instructed. They hooked up and made 4 long hoses and began pumping water onto the blazing tumbleweeds. Others got over the fence and raked fire lines by hand. The farmers did one heck of a job. Over 15 minutes had passed as the 9-1-1 fire dispatcher finally obtained the necessary information and assembled a task force. First arriving engine was from Barlow, followed by a brush truck and a utility truck from Greenmount. Next to arrive was a huge truck from Greenmount and they opened up with the water cannon as one tree exploded into flames. They held the line and soaked down the area as the neighbors went back at it. The fire was stopped at 681 Ridge Road as other departments from Pa. and Md. extinguished the remaining flames. Had it not been for the valiant and effective efforts of these neighbors, then 10 houses, 3 barns, 3 corals and paddocks and more than 480 acres of field, crops and trees might not be here today. Every fire truck ran out of water too. Kudos to the Ridge Road Knights and the fire department and Gettysburg fire dept/Ambulance. But do remember..when using a cell phone in the lower part of Adams County..make sure you ask--is this Adams County Control? You might be speaking with Frederick, Md 9-1-1 or Ithica,N.Y. Police Emergency. Whoever answers just don't hang up, tell them Gettysburg,Pa ,they'll transfer the call and also trace your cell to the nearest tower. And, U.S. 15 was never closed. Pa State Police unit H-15 kept on doing his speed trap until a car arrived from Cumberland Twp. and then traffic slowed to about 65.
