Athough I applaud your article on the issue I have some recommedations. How about a crew to ride along with one of the busiest departments in Suffolk County from both an EMS and Fire perspective to see first hand what we have to deal with(responding to false calls is a big problem in Suffolk County which also ties up crews for the real calls). Response times could be faster in day and night times if drivers pulled over as required by law. Vollies are needed but community education is also needed. We also have a huge communication issue with non-english speaking people, we are looking into this and could use support. What can be done about that ? thanks

the sad truth is it's not always a response problem as much as it is a dispatch problem from the county end. I'm a part-time dispatcher and a volunteer firefighter. typically, if someone calls 911, the call goes to the county 911 answering center. these calls are then prioritized ABCDE based on severity. the call is first given to police to respond, and then to fire or ambulance services. The REAL problem is that fire/ems are notified 1-3 minutes AFTER the police and sometimes fire/ambulance isn't notified until the police are on scene. i hear it all the time on the radios. the cops get the call, then 2-3 minutes later the FD/AMB pages the call out and notifies it's members.

95% of the time, the DISPATCHING is what needs to improve
