U.S. Cellular reminds people that it can be easy to "go green" on Earth Day or any day. Participating in Earth Day activities and adopting “greener” behaviors doesn't need to take much time, effort or money, and a few smart switches can significantly benefit the environment.
“Many of our customer benefits, like offering a discount to customers who choose paperless billing and our free Battery Swap program, also help the environment,” said Joe Cabrera, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Washington and Oregon.“In addition, we keep the environment in mind at our retail stores, which are equipped with energy-efficient lighting, Energy Star computers and appliances, and use products, such as carpet and furniture, with recycled content.”
U.S. Cellular offers the following “green” tips to help people adopt more eco-friendly habits:
Go paperless –Viewing and paying bills online can make a positive impact on the environment. According to PayItGreen.com , if one million people switched to paperless billing, it would save 400,000 pounds of paper, eliminate 6 million pounds of greenhouse gases and prevent 4 million gallons of wastewater from discharging into waterways each year. When U.S. Cellular customers choose paperless billing and sign up for autopay, they can get up to a 5 percent discount on their monthly plan. In addition to being eco-friendly, going paperless is convenient - no statements to misplace, no checks to write, no stamps to buy and less clutter in your mailbox. To sign up for these free services, visit www.uscellular.com , and click on “My Account.”
Trade in Your Phone – U.S. Cellular's Trade-In Program lets customers get up to $150 when they trade in their used mobile device - which is good for your wallet and the planet. Customers can trade in used devices to be refurbished or recycled and upgrade now to new 4G LTE devices, such as the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy S® Aviator™ or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1®, which will run on U.S. Cellular’s nationwide 3G network until the 4G LTE network is launched in Yakima later this year.
Unplug – When you’re not charging your phone, tablet or other electronic devices, save energy by unplugging them. By doing so, you'll reduce "standby power," when electronic devices and/or their chargers are plugged in but not actively in use. Standby power consumes six percent or more of the electricity in a typical home, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, at an annual cost of more than $50 per household.
Swap your battery – U.S. Cellular customers can use the company’s industry-leading Battery Swap program to extend the life of their phone and keep batteries out of landfills. Simply swap out your dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one at no cost by visiting any of U.S. Cellular's retail locations. Since its launch in 2008, more than 5 million batteries have been swapped out through this program.
