Tragic. With all the techno-junk floating around these days, cameras everywhere etc, shouldn't it be possible to detect a car travelling the wrong way on a major highway and alert aproaching drivers?
The only time the paper reports this is when someone gets killed, but I'm sure it happens fairly often. My girlfriend and I were almost hit on the Grand Central a few years ago by some maniac driving against traffic.
Face it, there are a millions of people living around here, and at any given moment thousands of them are high on something...

the passenger didnt alert the driver he was going the wrong way, i understand they were both probably drinking, but you would think one of them had enough sense left.

It is just part of the tragic scene seen all day here.
No turn on red...not me.
Stop.. perhaps.
Will just make the yellow light...
Yield not me.
Speed limit....you must be joking.
Talk on cell phone sure my call is important...
tailgate at 65 mph I know what I am doing.
Signal a turn too much effort.
Raining and dark I dont need headlights.
Etc Etc etc.
And licences for illegals...
It could be you and me Lord bless the family

Find out the bar these two guys just left and shut it down for the gross negligence of serving them. There is a time when responsible people shut off those that have had too much to drink. Take this approach towards those serving drinks and you may save some innocent families from having to deal with such sorrow and pain.

Like an illegal immigrant would have money to yap on a cell phone like drunken Pete and his buddies do. Or better yet, like they would have money to drive a car fast enough to cause damage.

Why is it that the innocent victim -- the one that gets hit -- dies, and the drunk wrong-way driver escapes with his life?

What makes you think it was a bar, could have been private party? could be bought from liquor store? All is irrelevant at this point. The Drunk driver has to take responsibility for his/her own actions. First the driver should be forced to watch the autopsy of his victim, as well as the furneral in handcuffs of course. Then a mandatory jail sentence regardlee of ethnic or racial background, no pleas deals, no reduced sentences. Too many lives destroyed by this scurge of life. Until it happens to you, you may not understand what I'm saying, but I pray God you never have to go through what this young mans family is suffering now. I also feel for the drunk drivers family, they will be facing hell for a long time to come.

Hate to burst your bubble here: Both Vehicles involved were operated by black men, not that you are right in the criticism about those who want to talk nonsense. Race has nothing to do with stupidity!

This is just horrific. My heart and prayers go out to the family of the man killed. It saddens me to read that this has happened again.

In 1977 I was driving on Sunrise Highway near West Babylon it was Christmas Day morning. I was going to work or going home (cant remember) but a car came up on the highway traveling the wrong way and almost took me out. I think that person was drunk, I still can see her face. It was a women driving.

I believe this happens a lot more than we know. I am glad that I was not killed that day. I wonder how many other people have had these near misses with these types of individuals? When is this drinking and driving going to stop? How many more innocent lives will be taken before we get serious about this crime on humanity?

Drunks driving the wrong way on highways is nothing new... it's been going on for years.

Twice in my lifetime I was lucky enough not to hit oncoming cars....

13 yrs ago around 2 am on the Clearview Expressway some jerk drove by me the wrong way around 35ave.

18 yrs ago on the GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE if you can believe it, on the upper roadway some jerk drove by me and my buddy coming back from Pocono Raceway at around 11 at night.

How do you avoid these losers?- Don't be on the roads at night I believe is the only way.

Everyone is a victim in this situation the driver and the victim, as well as there families. The real problem is the age limit to drive. Its like giving a loaded, cocked gun to a two year old. Teens, young adults an cars don't mix, any idiot can learn to drive. Responsibility comes with experience an experience comes with age

Freakin idiot.. yo uhave to be completely obliterated to get on teh SS going the wrong way. I remember once about 15 years ago I was returning home with friends and going East on SS toward home when we were traveling in the far left lane. We were about togo around ab end and right before we did, for some reason the driver switched from the left to the middle lane. About a couple seconds later, as we roudn the bend... there was a vehicle going WEST in OUR far left lane on the EB side!! We were all shocked and silent, as we knew what we nearly avoided! We would have beenKILLED at the speed both were traveling. I was about 19 or so

Homegirl.. I hope you do not seriously consider the DRIVER .. the one who was drunk.. a VICTIM!! He is a a murderer as far as I'm concerned. We do not live in a day of ignorance. We all know the consequences of Drinking then driving.. it's no different than taking a gun you know is loaded and aiming it at someone and pulling the trigger. He deserves to go to prison for life. THE DRUNK DRIVERS FAMILY and of course the people killed because of the drunk driver are the true victims.

Here's a tip on how to avoid wrong way drivers on parkways like the SS...

When your rounding a curve that you can't see around.. for example it curves left.. ride in teh far right lane or the middle lane.. so that you can see a little better.. actually middle lane is probably best.. so that way if they are in teh middle lane you have the right or left to manuever too..
Hope no one ever has to use that piece of advice.!
