WOW it's 2015 and Im looking for a place to retire. I am African American and spent time in the south with my grandparents. I thought maybe a coastal town in the south would be be the same as some I have visited on the west coast from California to Washington. Cost was a factor to me but now I know cost is more of a factor in other areas. I have never visited any Southern region since the 70's. I've only travel between New York and the West Coast. I was born and raised in Chicago. I did visit my grandparents in Georgia but they lived off a dirt road with neighbors a distance away. It was a farm in a farming community and I loved it. I am a urban person who talks to my neighbors and lives in a diverse community. Price can not be a major factor with me. I can not live in an area with snow and sub temperatures in my old age but I want to live in peace. I do not sit in my house and watch television. I walk 3 miles a day and walk my dog. I interact with everyone I can. I go to a church in my community. I love life and people. After reading everything on this page I'm looking West.

The people here don't like out-of-towners. They'll try to get you fired from jobs, play childish games, and so fourth. I've experienced it multiple times. Apparently this isn't a part of the country my family has fought for when they served in the military. I don't remember people complaining when they moved into my home state. I'm done with this crap. maybe I should just sue my employer and the co-worker that I can. I mean I didn't even want to be here in the first place and that would be my ticket out of here.

i moved here from az because i have a lot of family that lives here. guess they forgot to mention they all live in gated communities and they go out to eat at chain restaurants for fun---if they would have told me more about this place i would never have moved here.
1. traffic does suck. anyone that says different is full of it.
2. the music scene sucks. all the bands are cover bands. its like cover band capital of the U.S.
3.the beaches are crowded as soon as the weather gets nice until its cold again.
4. good schools are few and far between for all age kids.
5. not a lot to do... unless you like cover bands..... a lot. see # 2
6. the town is majorly segregated.
7. the museums are small and as much as i appreciate the effort, there just isn't enough content at the museums to entertain you for more than an hour at most.
8. downtown nightlife is goofy- can't really explain -- you just have to see it. weird venues, dirty, etc...
9. it smells :( i don't know what it is but it smells so bad like cat pee sometimes......
10. and as previously mentioned in other posts, the people..... and i hate to generalize because my neighbors and parents of kids who go to my kids school are pretty nice (a lot not originally from here)... but overall the people you run into daily are not too friendly. not much of a community feel here.
11. the crime rate is scary as mentioned in previous posts.
12. haven't been impressed with the healthcare here either.
13. job market is bad. i fell into a job that actually pays really well for here from what i have seen but i have never worked with an unprofessional, trashy bunch of people. everything you read about employers paying lower wages since we live by the beaches is true.

and blah blah move away... i hear you.... i would just want someone to warn me before moving here. our house went rapidly down in value once we actually found a house decent enough to buy that we could afford, which is still too small for us, so as soon as we can get out from under this.....we will move far, far away.

i would suggest any one looking to move here to SERIOUSLY consider other options.

There is much bitterness in you, my friend. It does you no good. Wilmington is no more backwards than any other the many other cities I've lived in around the world. Sure - there are losers everywhere. So. Maryland is a really odd place. I'm white and the white folks here make me feel more uncomfortable than do the black folks.

Look past color and look into the soul of a person. Dams, I must be watching too much Barack Obama - I'm starting to hum coum-buy-ya.:)

Peace and strength to you and your family, my friend.
Your a racist pig. Wilmington SUCKS. If you are not black or white please be advised that Wilmington is very Redneckish as well as thug life like. Horrible place to live and people are ignorant! If your black or white you can fit in just as long as you live in your own neck of the woods. Because mixed races living amongst each other is not a good fit for either ethnic background no matter how GOD like you are the whites are reckneckish and the blacks will rob you blind. STAY CLEAR OF WILMINGTON!!! The cops are Southern Good Ol Boys who love to arrest minorities who go downtown to have a good meal but get messed with by Reckneck morons who are still wearing KKK white t-shirts just waiting to start crap with minorities, but instead of cops taking these ignorant racist pricks to jail they instead take the side of the drunken redneck. No good comes to you unless your white or a wealthy black man. Lived there for one year and the weather sucks and people are rude and all ignorant!

I agree with your post. Sorry you had to move to Wilmington. I too learned the hard way being if Native American/Hawaiian decent. Very Reckneck or too ghetto minded people. Out of Staters are definitely frowned upon. DO NOT RETIRE in Wilmington! You will regret it.

Go west my friend. From California and bought a house on South 6th St. One block to my right is ghetto and one block to my left is White Trash. Been there a whole year and now left my home to wife who is white but she is afraid to stay but family lives in Raleigh so she didn't want to leave with me to California. NEVER ever! Will I go back to Wilmington due to racist pig mentality! I am Native American/Hawaiian with long hair. Guess I was too Hollywood for morons who judge by appearance instead of Soul. WILMINGTON SUCKS!

Originally from San Diego. Do not move here unless you like racist morons. They don't like out of staters and definitely don't like California minded people. But if reckneck morons turn you on than you'll be in Hill Billy Heaven. Have house on 6th St near downtown but moved back to California due to too many run ins with Racist morons downtown. Not San Diego EVER! Good luck sweetie. Still have house there but selling it ASAP.

Definitely not San Diego my Dear. Do not move here! From San Diego moved here last year. Hate everything about Wilmington. Still own house there but now live back West. If you love redneck morons?, than you will be in Hill Billy Heaven. Do yourself a favor and look else where. Best of luck.

I have just discovered your website and wanted to try and gather some information. We are relocating to the area from South Africa. I am an American and my husband is British. I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC, therefore moving back to my roots. We are looking at the coastal areas as the temperatures will be about the same as where we live at the present time. We are both in our 50's and 60's and work from home. Mike does Internet copy writing and websites, I do research and I also have a business which I will have to began from scratch again as the equipment will be too expensive to ship, plus the voltage is much different. I hand craft solid wood furniture cottage/beach style and would like to carry on with this when settled in NC.

We are most likely going to have to rent some place for a short or long term as the difference in money exchange. As it works out we get a lot more for our money over here, but the situation politically is getting rather tense. This is what is motivating our anticipated change. To give you an example, we have an 18.5 acre farm with two residences, 1 main house and 1 smaller cottage and we paid the equivalent of $75,000. I wanted to ask you, as you own property there at the coast, perhaps you know of someone in the area who is not really looking to sell, but perhaps they too want a change in scenery and would like someone to live on the premises and manage the operation and oversee the day to day operations.

If you would like to know about who we are and what we are all about, please look at our website, www.themasons.co.za , it is here that you learn more about us and in fact more than you really want to know, but this is who we are. Our lives is an open book and we hide nothing. My personal business website is www.woodcrafts.co.za , and it is here that you will be able to see some of the items I hand craft. We are both very keen to be welcomed into a community that is friendly, warm, nonjudgmental and will accept us as part of their community. We do like to entertain and welcome guests into our home and enjoy good times. We do not "party" all the time and there is never any loud music to contend with except for maybe the occasional Jazz or Opera.

We would have to have a rather fast and powerful internet connection, as the work my husband does can be done from anywhere in the world, this is why we can do it from home and do not have to have the overhead expense of an outer office. We also do not like driving at night, but only on occasion, if we have been out to visit others as we both have night blindness, and the rush hour traffic we have to contend with here is a donkey cart or cattle being moved from one camp to the other.

I trust I have not bored you to tears, but because we really don't have anyone in the area to help us, we thought you might be able to either pass this along to someone who can help or guide us into the right direction. Thanking you in advance for your kind assistance and your valuable time. I do look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Yours Sincerely,
Liz Mason
Don't let some of these people discourage you on moving here. Wilmington is a wonderful place. I moved here from KY and don't regret it at all. there are so many places to eat, you can eat out every night for a year and not eat in the same place twice. Beaches are nice, but it can be expensive to park at a couple. So far the people I've met are great.
