OK I really feel for this family on there loss I really do but shame on them for NOT having that little girl in a life jacket. There is no excuse for that. I am 31 years old and I still wear one and my daughter never goes near the water without one on and she swims like a fish and is 9 years old.

I TOTALLY agree with Anonymous. Why on earth was a 3 year old in a lake without a life jacket! A pool is one thing, but at a lake, even the BEST swimmers can be caught off guard, caught in debris, etc. and no one can locate them to render assistance in a lake due to the mirky waters. Please use your head people.

At 3 years old, she should have at least been wearing arm floats, if not an entire life jacket. I've always loved the water, and I wore arm floats until I was about 5 or so. Once my parents realized how good a swimmer I was, they let me go without the floats. In turn, they required that I stay in shallow enough water that I could always touch the bottom. I can still hear my mom asking, "Can you touch bottom?" to make sure I wasn't too far out.

I know this was an accident, but it surely could have been prevented had the family been paying closer attention and taken proper precautions.

I have a year old and i cant imagine losing her or any of my kids for that matter. I feel for that family. Life jackets are so important. This family must be hurting immensly and needs alot of prayer not critisism right now. The guilt they must feel is going to haunt them enough for the rest of their lives without the negative comments.

I agree that this family needs support. On the flip side, children need protection. I am so tired and heartbroken over all the tragedies I read about involving children when it seems that common sense and a little more care could easily have prevented the tragedy. Honestly, what parent here would allow a 3 year old to swim in a lake with no floaties of any type? I feel for children because they depend totally on their parents for protection, and so many parents are seriously lacking in the responsibility department. Protect your children people!
