Where were, and what were, the local churches in your neighborhood, and what were they doing to help you as a nine year old to take care of five younger siblings in your home?
At least a quilt is something tangible and real, and if it was made with love and compassion it is all the better, at least in my opinion, and experience. If I were in a similar situation I would prefer a human helping hand up and the comfort of a hand made quilt, and birth control for my parents, over a cynical and patronizing bureaucratic response of higher taxes and more government dependency. Genuine Islamic,Judaic, and Christian [note the three primary religions at conflict in today's world, not heaven on Earth] charity, and holiness is far better than saber rattling and brick and mortar guilt inducing emotionality the mainstream presents us with in daily mega doses.
