Trolls 101:
1. Do not sign up as members, so don’t have profiles. I have a profile and choose not to hide my post history as some members do.
2. Often use multiple names and alter their location to avoid getting banned by Topix for spamming. I use my real name and location.
3. Often use inappropriate language, like the one on the gay forums who constantly posts vulgar language about sex acts (which gays do not do.) And pick certain members to insult and argue with, following them from thread to thread, much as bullies do in person.
4. Often cut and paste the same posts repeatedly, as one troll on the gay forums does, posting the same Bible clobber passages several times a day for over two years. He also uses multiple names and locations.
5. Not agreeing with YOU does not make someone a troll.
Then why do you only post to Gay& Lesbian issue at the pace of 8 posts a day dear for months Linda? That goes into compulsive behavior and you should get a life....some of us that arrived at this thread came through the local news feed and never heard of this Topix. And yes you still appear to be a "troller" looking to people to argue with on one topic all day long!! Im off this board and subject having had enough of the "love and understanding" offered up by the pro day of silence posters here....another opportunity to open a mind to your pov is lost.

LindaS. Judge not,Wake up and read the article. First off, this happened in my local school district here in Washington, not across the country as an interesting story to comment on (I noted you are listed as posting from Fla.)
The National Day of Silence took place in schools all across the country, not just in your neighborhood. The same with the forum you are participating in.

The Topix forum software links you to the rest of the ENTIRE WORLD for purposes of discussion. In this case you are linked to the GAY/LESBIAN Forum, the OPINION Forum, the EDUCATION,ETC. Forum, and the SNOQUALMIE,WA Forum.

Anything and everything you post appears in all four forums simultaneously, worldwide, for all to read and reply to.

One of the items I noted in the news article was this comment:
"As the day progressed, the more I saw the use of fear and intimidation to try to force conformity. Anyone who openly said they did not support homosexuality was then repeatedly questioned and drilled on why they thought that, and told that such thinking was not open-minded and therefore was unacceptable."

"WHO" was doing the "repeated questioning and drilling" if the participants mouths were taped shut?

It appears that the author of the news article is, herself, a grandstanding troll with a fabricated news story.

BY the next morning and you are still obsessed with me answering your baited question! For those of you on the GL feed, note to selves, if you want a straight breeder to understand your world better, have respect for their beliefs rather than the gang pile of judgement experienced on the boards... with instant comdemnation of someone opposed to the DOS and use of terms like "hatred & bigotry" I don't scare easily and am comfortable that my beliefs system works for me....
I thought that you already knew that we believe in the same principles to a degree and you we only baiting me with obviously foolish either/or agruments..
1) I don't believe that is "is a good thing" to harass or bully someone for their beliefs, whether those beliefs are sexual preferences, race, gender, nationality, religious affiliation or age...
Thank you...finally. Now was that so hard?

My point in making you admit that bullying and harrassment should not be tolerated is that once you admit that, you have no valid reason for being against the day of silence.

As for respecting beliefs, I have no problem with you thinking homosexuality is a sin. That is absolutely your right, and you can use that belief to control your own behavior. What I do have a serious problem with is someone not being able to publicly admit that they believe bullying and harrassing a student because they are GLBT is wrong.

So yeah, I was still hung up on that question, which you repeatedly refused to answer. I was beginning to think that you were in support of, or at least indifferent about, the bullying and harrassment of GLBT students. Thankfully you have cleared that up.

Judging by all the responses from the GL posting pros:
1) You know baiting when you see it and rise above it dont you???
2) You all want to pile on my comments....stop responding if you're not intrigued! You like a fat kid eating candy who cant stop and blames the 7/11 for putting it at the check out counter!!
I'm beginning to get the idea that any question asked of anti-gays is considered baiting. I ask a lot of questions at times but it's only to try and understand where a person is coming from. They are hardly ever answered. It would seem that if a person actually believes what they are saying they wouldn't feel it was baiting.

While we are on the subject of asking questions....why is it that no one asks about my life and tends to make assumptions instead? Do people really think they know me just because of my orientation?

Absolutely I believe there are some universal laws that are immutable. However, I do not believe they are based on any specific religion, so I wouldn't classify them as sins since the word sin has a religious connotation. I believe those "universal laws" are based on common sense and a respect for others. Why do you ask?

That what our local SVSD district did..no scorre for you on that one devons.
If your child is praying silently what is there to approve of or disapprove of? Praying silently does not go against any law that I'm aware of. Perhaps you could point one out.

No slam or baiting. Just a comment that states you demonstrate a lack of understanding of what a troll is.

Now if you took that as a slam, all I can say is...I'm sorry you are so sensitive and I will stop posting to you (as everyone should).

Do you have anything to offer about the subject of the board?

Mt Si 09 Dad--"Glyph - Since public school are funded on a state wide level, you arent funding my chiild's schooling."

True only on MOST of the funding, not all. Some federal dollars are involved in education.

"School vouchers don't make YOU pay for my children's schooling....it's allow me a credit to choose which school to send my child versus the one in the district in which you live."

Vouchers are stealing money from desperately underfunded public education for private schools where public money does NOT belong.

"studies have found that when local schools have to compete for the "available" student dollars, the quality of the school and the education."

STUDIES?? You mean "Propoganda from the far right." Competition already exists, the idea that schools will do better under the threat of shutting down for lack of funding is assinine. Vouchers do NOT make education better, they just increase the learning gap, it's another tax cut for the wealthy at the expense of the poor, the disabled, those from broken homes...all CHILDREN. The single most dispicable of a string of bad ideas that revolve around the sick idea that the rich pay too much for the privilidge of living in this great nation.

Yes. The tax money that supports public schools is paid by everyone, not only parents. We pay these taxes, and receive something in return: we get to live in a literate society.

If parents choose to send their kids to private schools, that's fine. There are many excellent private schools that offer financial aid packages.

But to expect the taxpayers to support private schools is ludicrous.

The whole uproar about the Day of Silence boils down to the fact that people do not understand the Day of Silence. I think it would benefit everyone to go to the following link to understand exactly what the DOS is all about.

http://www.dayofsilence.org/

I think the majority of people who were protesting the DOS would be completely embarrassed by their actions if they knew exactly what they were protesting. According to the website, "The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools". Those who are not embarrassed about protesting such a cause should be.

I for one will never be "open-minded" to the idea that bullying and harrassment of GLBT students is acceptable. If people want to call me close-minded for that, I'll wear the close-minded label proudly!

I took the comment out, because I wanted to talk specifically with you. Mt Si 09 dad. And worry not, I am not going to jump down your throat either.

I have to agree that there has not been a post stating you are against lgb. But I also read, and re-read if I do not get what is stated. Not everyone does that, and I have been known to even take action, before looking again at what i saw posted. Sometimes people want a direct answer to their question, and it is frustrating not to get one.
(this is now just in general)
I do not believe the Day of Silence was intended to just be a "Gay thing". I have been aware of it, since my niece began school 5 years ago. I asked her this year when she mentioned it what it meant to her. This was her answer:
"It is a day we do not speak, in support to those who are bullied, harassed and beaten.(Think she meant beat up) I give the day of silence for my friend who is constantly tormented for being slightly retarded, and the kid in my class who has a severe case of what the teacher calls OCD, who gets picked on for being slow. But it is for everyone".
And thinking back, the kids did the exact same thing when I was in school, to all kinds of kids. So basically I do not believe this is a day for just the LGB community. It probably should not be stated as such, but this year was to honor the memory of Lawrence King's tragedy.
I would also like to know why posting on a particular forum is consented to being a troll. I post here, because it is who I am, and I hope I can discuss things with everyone here, minus the few real trolls there are.
I do not just post here though either. This actually began from the Janet Jackson forum first. It became riddled with people bashing other people back and forth, so I really do not post there often anymore. I would post far more on a Final fantasy forum, but there is not one, and as of right now, i do not know how to get one started.

Overall answer to the topic: The Day of Silence is for EVERYONE who has been harassed bullied and hurt by others in school.

I read and post about what is relevent to me, just like you do. What difference does it make to you what I post about or how often? It sounds pretty close to a, "personal slam," to me, but I don't mind.
Why are you so defensive? Why do you assume anyone is going to slam you personally?
Debate and discussion of any topic requires the voicing of different opinions and the ability to not take them personally. It is about speaking from logic and fact, not emotion. My opinion may be different from yours, but that does not mean I am attacking you personally.

I do think you were talking about a private school, not public. President Shrub and many other religious right(as well as some other religious groups)wanted was for federal funds in the form of vouchers for children to go to private, faith based schools. I was against it then and I'm against it now.

Whether you stay or go from this thread is certainly your personal decision to make.

I too first found my way into these forums through stories like these at the website of my local newspaper. After posting for a while on local news stories I did some exploring and discovered the broader world of the Topix community, where there are stories and articles on almost any imaginable topic or interest.

If you're not ready to jump in and post and face the responses (both good and bad), I'd suggest you just browse through various threads of interest to get a "feel" for how discussion, debate and, unfortunately, attacks flow in a forum such as this.

You'd then discover how laughable your (and others') accusations of trolling, baiting and compulsive behavior against LindaS and other posters here truly are.

Quite frankly, it doesn't seem likely to me that an opportunity has been lost to change your personal POV on the topic given the content of some of your posts. It's very rare that people actually change their opinions in a forum like this although it does happen on occasion.

If you do decide to stay and participate in this or other threads in Topix, you really should do a bit of research about trolls so you actually know what you're talking about.

It’s funny, finding this thread on accident after all of these years. Here is what I have to say if anyone ever still looks;
To be honest most of you completely missed the point. What I was trying to show that day was that the school had changed the meaning of the Day of Silence. I realize and know that elsewhere it was a protest against bullying and discrimination, but at my school it was changed to a show of support. If you didn’t participate no matter the reason you were hazed. At every door into the school they stood and handed out pink triangles and asked “Do you support?” That’s what it meant to them.
I wrote that article as an English assignment my sophomore year in Highschool. The object was to do research and write an article on any topic. I choose the Day Of Silence because of similar events that took place the year before. One of my friends was badly hurt for not participating so for that year I decided to conduct my research by declining at every door. Even the teachers would treat you differently. I was shocked at how these people I’ve known can just start turning on others due to a personal choice. Isn’t that what they didn’t want others doing?
The whole point of the day was supposed to be anti-bully but in my school it just created it. That’s why I wanted to write the article. Not because I am against homosexuality but because everyone should be free to their opinion no matter what. It shouldn’t be allowed to use it as an excuse for hate, on either side.
