Aiken reacts to Freedom From Religion Foundation's letter regarding public prayer

Aug 8, 2010 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Aiken Standard

On July 12, when Aiken City Mayor Fred Cavanaugh said he was opening the City Council meeting with a moment of silence rather than a prayer due to a possible litigation, the faces of many of the residents present were stricken with confusion - the beginning of an overwhelming reaction.

This may come as surprise to those in the 'Bible-belt', but we are supposed to be free FROM religion too. New Yorkers are fighting the planned construction of a Mosque near Ground zero; asking to be free from a Christian prayer is not too much to ask. Continuing prayer at official civic meetings, while a nice touch for many, would only open the door to requests for similar prayers from every 'quarter'.
Our founding fathers fled England and her church, why do some expect those who do not share their beliefs to tolerate demonstrations of a specific religion and no others?

This is the way it is in a free society that is a make-up of myriad races and creeds. If you are free to worship as you like in your-own church, why do you need to do it in public places too? Be happy you have the right to do it in your place of worship and leave the civic meetings to civic matters.

ALl the comments in the article, and below the article about the Christian faith being "attacked" and about their right to pray for guidance being taken away are so typical.

Yet none of them can see the plain logic that if there were a moment of silence they, and others of other faiths (or none), would be free to pray for guidance or call upon a diety. No rights or freedoms would be taken away. There are many Christains and other monotheist who would prefer silence to pray in their own way instead of having to following a generic prayer because that is the only way a small, vocal faction of Christians feel vindicated and self-worthy.
