The spotlight on the sex scandals illuminates the next big scandal, sloppy and unaccountable Church finances. Stories are bleeding out in the press all over the country about slipshod parrochial and diocesan handling of money. The laity need absolute financial transparency from their leaders, who cavalierly forget that is the people's money. If the folks at St. Bernadine's or any place are going to fork over $1.5 mil to the archdiocese they should also demand a financial report that would pass muster under an accountant's eyes. Long before the abuse payouts Roger Mahoney spent the archdiocese into oblivion with his beautiful but wasteful cathedral. American Catholics are the most generous in the world. That goodwill deserves a structure of accountability commensurate with their generosity. The abuse scandal has cost the clergy and hierarchy dearly in terms of confidence in their sexual mores. When realization of the rampant fiscal shenanigans hits home, their confidence in their handling of money will dry up along with their contributions.

Okay. Full disclosure here. I am a 55 year old former Catholic seminarian who no longer practices. I have two grandchildren. They are not Catholics and neither are my children. I was the victim of sexual and physical abuse as a child and teen at the hands of nuns. As a seminarian a Catholic nun attempted to coerce me into a sexual relationship. In high school I was beaten several times for talking by priests or a lay teacher.

This is simply wrong. Its a nice idea to pay for someone else's sins with a third party's money IF the Third Party completely agrees. Apparently, this is not the case. Look closer. I would bet dollars to donuts that the pastor is angling to get a promotion to Monsignor. This will do it. This is a phony, back handed way to get the Cardinal in your pocket if you are an ambitious priest. This has nothing to do with charity. This is a good career move by the priest.
