At a time when Caroline County is in debt up to its ears, is it wise to build a YMCA at this time in Caroline County?

Why didn't the county pundants try to get a commercial company to come into Caroline County and save the residents a alot of money.

Could it be that Wayne Acors has a personal reason for having the YMCA built in Ladysmith?

New commercial businesses in Caroline? Why?

The school system is the worse in the area, infrastructure's lacking, State Fair just declared bankruptcy, businesses closing up monthly and leaving, even the farmers coop went out of business in this ag. county.

I'll never use the Y, but it's a plus for the county in the eyes of outsiders looking in.

The final nail in the coffin will be if the BOS sells the water utility to a private co. which will jack the rates up. We'll never see a new co. here after that.

Having the Y in the county is more than just a gym for adults as they offer afterschool programs for the kids - keeps them out of trouble and away from the Xbox.
I'm with Jim Tate on selling the county utilities to a private outfit. NO!!!!
Lake Land Or' and Lake Caroline have had more problems dealing with the private outfits, plus the added problems of trying to coordinate through SCC, DEQ and VDH when there's problems with water quality, failing plants and exorbitant rate increases.
Again, NO!!!

At no time has anyone said where the money to pay for the Y is coming from. All Wayne Acors will ever say is that it is coming from "profers". Frankly, I believe that in the end..the people of Caroline County will be the "profers".

I am sorry, but I will be new to the area. Why do some see the YMCA as a bad thing? Caroline needs something like this. There is no great gym anywhere near the area. For those of us that like to stay in shape, we would have to invest in our own home gym or settle for a subpar workout facility. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization that offers a lot of activities for all ages in the community. It's especially good for keeping young ones busy and out of trouble, creating a better place to live for everyone in the area as we know how kids can get with too much free time and too little supervision. I may be misinformed so please correct me, but I was just curious as to what the issue with this construction is. This is one more reason that I am considering living here as I work out 5 days a week and would love to have a local gym. Also, is there a solid date for completion and opening yet?

The Y is a good thing, when viewed in a vacuum that excludes rapidly rising county debt and other more pressing needs.
Like replacing the money in the till so they don't have to borrow just to make payroll.
Like fixing the schools.
Like water.
I was at the BOS meeting when Acors shouted everyone down, insisting the user fee charged to homeowners at Caroline Pines would finance the entire water project there, even though the numbers given moments before at that meeting showed those charges would only cover part of the project. It was only a couple months later when a $1.8 million appropriation for Caroline Pines appeared unannounced in the budget.
The county can't deliver decent water to large numbers of citizens yet it continues to approve projects needing water the county can't provide.
(By the way, anyone going through the paperwork relating to the Lake Caroline water debacle can see the county utilities department intentionally deceived the SCC.)

I await an explanation as to how and when the county will recoup the millions it has committed to the YMCA.

Who is going to purchase memberships at the Y? The Y itself has no idea because they admitted to doing no survey of the area beforehand. All they did was talk to Acors and Ashcraft. That was it.
Will it be all those people around there who purchased homes during the housing bubble but now find themselves underwater; or all those folks owning property being foreclosed on?

The Y is a fine organization that provides much more that gyms and workout facilities. It managed to pull this off with the county taking all the financial risk.

I see your point, Burqa. Thanks for expressing your concerns. I for one, will be getting a membership, and have nothing but great things to say about the organization and its programs, and am glad that you recognize how fine it is as well. I am not from the area, but I would anticipate a fair amount of residents would get a membership since there is no other place like it nearby. And for those that cannot afford a membership, the Y has an "open doors" program to assist with the costs. Furthermore, if the water bill is as high as some say it is in Lake Land Or, I will be filling up my water bottles and taking all of my showers here as well! Lol!

Sorry but I don't want a YMCA built on Durrette road, I normally throw out all the trash in my pick up as I drive down it, it's just a bunch of dirty trailer on it anyways..

I am so excited as someone who relocated from Philadelphia,PA. There is nothing to do for children or adults in this area and with gas prices as high as they are, and everything is so far away... I welcome this. Cannot wait!
