THIS IS NASSAU COUNTY FILTH, & GREED AT IT'S FINEST!!!!!.....97% OF ALL RED LIGHT SUMMONSES WOULD NEVER BE ISSUED IF THE YELLOW LIGHT OF THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL WERE MADE 2 - 3 SECONDS LONGER.......THE UNSUSPECTING DRIVER GETS CAUGHT IN THE INTERSECTION WHILE IT TURNS RED, & FLASH GOES THE PICTURE, & A SUMMONS IS SENT TO THE VEHICLE OWNER!!!....IF THE YELLOW IS A FEW SECONDS LONGER THESE VEHICLES WOULD HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO TRAVEL OUT OF THE INTERSECTION.... ESPECIALLY IN SLOWER TRAFFIC, & NO TICKET WOULD BE NEEDED!!!!.....NASSAU COUNTY KNOWS THIS RIGHT UP FRONT!!!!!.... IF YOU VISIT THE NATIONAL MOTORISTS ASSN WEBSITE, THERE IS A STORY ON THIS EXACT TOPIC...... NASSAU COUNTY DOESN'T CARE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER WHO ACTUALLY WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL AT THE TIME OF THE RED LIGHT VIOLATION..... JUST SEND THE CASH, & NO ONE'S DIVERS RECORD WILL BE AFFECTED!!!... KA..CHING....$$$$$$ IT'S A MONEY MACHINE!!!!.....FILTHY ROTTEN WHORES!!!!!.....ANNND..... WE ARE PAYING THE SALARIES OF THESE LOW LIFE SCUM MAGOTS THAT MAKE THESE LAWS!!!! VERY TYPICAL OF GOUGE LONG ISLAND!!!!..... & I'LL BET SUFFOLK WILL BE NEXT ON THE CAMERA DEAL!!!!!..... HOWS THAT GRAB YA?????

Red Light Citations Drop Below One Per Day
Increasing Yellow Light Time at Fairfax Red Light Camera Intersection Results in 97 percent Drop in "Red Light Violations."

Eric Skrum, Communications Director for the National Motorists Association said, "Records from Fairfax County show that increasing the time of yellow lights significantly decreases the number of red light violations. The Virginia Department of Transportation increased the yellow time on the traffic lights at US50 and Fair Ridge Drive by 1.50 seconds on March 26, 2001. This increase in yellow time from 4.00 seconds to 5.50 seconds resulted in a 97 percent drop in citations, less than one per day, at this red light camera enforced location."

Skrum continued, "Fairfax County records show that 'events,' red light violations, captured by the camera fell from an average daily rate of 52.1 per day before the yellow time increase to just 2 per day afterwards, a reduction of 97 percent.

"Fairfax County records also show that citations being issued dropped to just 0.82 citations a day on average during the 67 days after the yellow time was increased.

"This camera was activated February 8, 2001 by Lockheed Martin under an agreement with Fairfax County. The Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for operating these signals. The decision to install a red light camera at this intersection confirms that this intersection was considered a location of serious violations with increased potential for accidents.

"This experience should prove to any skeptic that sound engineering practices, not only work, but are preferable to exploiting motorists through the use of ticket cameras and related automated enforcement devices," Skrum concluded.

How about putting cameras in all the politician's offices who came up with this, and mail them a fine each time they do something improper?

More wasted money...better off posting traffic cops at some intersections on a rotating basis or just finally go after the "Losers" who are driving illegally and impound their vehicle...it would be alot cheaper!

Wow look at all the peopl;e against it. Why are you against it ?I guess you run red lights yourself.

YELLOW MEANS SLOW DOWN . Not speed up to out run the light.

IF you drive safely you should not be against the red light cameras.

Why not place cameras at Commisioners' homes to see what time they actually go to work.(or in some cases not go to work at all)

Dont forget to place them outside at One West Street in Mineola in the parking area on Old Country Road to see which person from the fourth floor leaves work early on Fridays to play golf.

Left out of the article is the fact that these cameras actually cause accidents as drivers sudently hit the brakes to avoid a ticket, then get rear ended by someone tailgating.
Not a good idea.

Under this proposal, Souzzi would have to mail himself a lot of tickets. Can you hear "exceptions for county executives who are late for meetings" in the law?

Another scam by Suozzi to try to solve the looming fiscal crisis in Nassau. He can't even manage the fleet of cars we're paying for and now he wants cameras at traffic lights? What number of new commissioners he employs will it take to handle the project? Can't wait to see.

I'm not too sure about that, if in fact these cameras cause accidents there is something wrong with the driver and the follower. Per the NY State driver's manual, a yellow light means "The light is changing from green to red. Be ready to stop for the red light". So using your logic, the driver has no intention of stopping and the "follower" is tailgating. That's the problem with todays drivers, they have no respect for the laws that are in place. How often are you on the LIE and see a patrol car driving at 65 and the vehicles around the car are doing the same, or how often do you see the rolling stop, running the red light etc.
I spent 14 years in Germany and the cameras are used all over the place. The one thing great about the camera's in Germany is that the driver does not get a ticket, the owner of the vehicle does which does not count as points. The camera's will free up police officers to do more important things that babysit terrible drivers.
