besides Mastic or Shirley (Lindenhurst) AKA Swindlehurst comes in 3rd in Ghetto shanty towns on Long Island.

All I see is White Trash walking around. Cars parked on front lawns. Cars parked in the street on jacks for years unregistered. Kids unkepts. Schools bad. Town looks like hell. Bars are Ghetto!

Lindenhurst looks like a natural diaster hit it and it keeps getting worse.

i lived there temporarily. what i didn't like was all the illegal apartments. i had neighbors who would have rented their aluminum sheds for $$ if they could have gotten away with it. tons of parked cars, every street a grid with busy traffic, every neighborhood a shortcut to someplace else. no shoulder on Wellwood and no proper zoning--you have autoparts stores and lumbar yards next to homes. and montauk highway is a nightmare---lights every 10 feet and no trees.

I'm from wantagh and have been living here for five years now. I have to say it is not at all like described above. It is not as nice as Wantagh but not too far behind. It is only getting nicer. There is a nice village area, train that gets you to the city in under 1hr good school district. It's a blue collar white town that is affordable and safe. Be real people.

I have lived in Lindenhurst for all my life. I loved the schools I went to, the luncheonettes that USED to be, kids that used to go to church and then for breakfast at the diner acrosss from the church, the good old days. My kids went to Lindenhurst shcools, they were good, but much more lax than years ago. Time changes everything. Schools don't keep the good principals, they disappear, and some other non caring principals come in. The schools then change. Lindenhurst schools have a problem-if they can't control the children, they "diagnose" them with ADHD send them into evaluations and then special ed classes. I know there are many children who do not belong in the classes, but are there because the teachers can't handle them. They are getting too much money for things they can't handle. Yes, middle school is rougher today than years ago, but come on, a teacher who can't handle an elementary student has issues. They don't belong there. With the kind of taxes we pay, we should have better schools and more training available. They have too many restrictions on kids who left school at 16, who couldn't cope with working at 16, and wants to go back to school. They make them wait till after their class graduates to get a GED. Why make it tough for them to learn, let them get the education their parents are paying so highly for.
And our MAYOR...why are there so many stores on Wellwood Ave vacant? Why can't he do something. This town has become a GHOST TOWN from years ago.
I think the Village should become part of the TOWN, and this way the taxes will be lowered and we can get our stores filled up and look like a real town again. Come on Lindenhurst, STEP UP YOUR GAME.

and exactly what would you suggest that the Mayor do about all the vacant stores? Oh, well let's see perhaps he can convince the landlords NOT to charge $2400.00 per month, plus property tax, plus utilities, plus be responsible for all repairs....Oh, wait that would be socialism.

I was never so happy until the day I moved from Lindentrash all my neighbors were white trash. Most did not work only collected Unemployment, Disability, Social Service. What a hell hole Lindenhurst was. Ghetto is to nice of a word! How about S*** Hole and with the Bergen Point Sewer treatment plant at the end of Lindentrash I would even call it a sewer treatment area where you smell poo in the air at night if windows are left open!

Since when is Lindenhurst considered ghetto? Do you even know what it is like to live in a ghetto??? Does the village have a lot of violence, and legal barriers that's forcing minorities and immigrants into this area because of economic conditions? No, it's just your average middle class neighborhood, with many of the people educated and hard-working. There are so many far worse places to live on Long Island, and I don't think Lindenhurst deserves to be called "ghetto."

I was born in Brooklyn and raised in Corona Queens. I lived in Flushing Queens before moving to Lindenhurst. You people must be out of your minds. Lindenhurst is a great place. There is white trash in every neighborhood. I know about Ghetto's, trust me you people know nothing about what a Ghetto is like. I see some of the areas that you live in, you shouldn't be talking. Lindenhurst is Beverly Hills compared to some of the places that you are living. If anyone likes, I'll take you on a road trip to teach you what a bad neighborhood really is. I moved here with my wife and kids. Trust someone that has actually been around more than a few towns, Lindenhurst is a beautiful place with great schools. Leave your name and number if anyone wants to take me up on my offer.

We moved from Massapequa to Lindenhurst in 1960. I went to E.W. Bower and L.H.S. I lived on Shore Rd.(682) right across from the canal. I don't remember Lindy ever being trashy back then. You had some working people that lived in some of the "bungalows" near the bay but; that was the extent of low rent. I always loved where I grew up. I do remember more "city" kids moving in during the 60s but; we became friends in the neighborhood and at school. Crime was petty. Drugs were experimental, and no organised gangs. Just us punks hanging around but; we were more smart mouth than tough. I hate to read all of this. Can't go back; so make changes ahead!
