To the Editor: When you start to see an amazing number of people - whom you know are good drivers and who rarely, if ever, get a ticket - tell you they have received an automated red light ticket in the mail, you have to ask yourself this: Are these villains who have eluded the law up until now or is this some money-making scam? The answer is ...

Obviously, these cameras have been nothing but a distraction to drivers, and is more of a safety issue than a solution. The only way this assault, straight from "1984," can be put on a leash is a petition to the city. Let's get started!!!

Red light cameras are a cancer on the driving public; they are no more than scams to extort money and divide it between providers and municipalities. It's an obvious conspiracy and unholy alliance to bilk motorists to make up for shortfalls caused by graft and corruption at every level.

Not only is this a criminal conspiracy, but the expressed motive could not be more false. Red light cameras actually CAUSE accidents. Drivers who drive the same routes every day are aware of them and will brake hard at an inappropriately, unsafe time instead of proceeding through an intersection as one would normally. The driver following is surprised by this and plows into the back of the car trying to avoid a ticket.

If you are reading this you need to keep abreast of any plans in your area for this scourge and stomp it out quickly. Make local officials who are proponents of this plan offer up unbiased, factual studies to demonstrate the validity of their plan to promote SAFETY. If they can't prove it will make driving SAFER, then demand they abandon the plan. If you don't do anything about this, don't complain later.

Anyone with half a brain knows those cams are a scam. It was proven long ago they cause more accidents than they prevent. But don't expect the local governments give them up once they see what kind of a cash cow they are. The best thing is simply find a route around them.
