I love the Sundown Salute. I love the community coming together for the annual party.
This morning there was a report on the radio that to accomodate the businesses on 7th there were going to be some moves of location, a block here, a block there, etc. Question: Why not move the entire festival to the vacant fields between JC and Grandview? There is AMPLE space to set up the fair, and to allow for parking. If the land is privately owned, I am certain arrangements could be met for payment that would be LESS than the LOSS of revenues to the businesses. We would NOT need to block the main intersection of the city. The side streets would not be blocked with cars. We could still launch the fireworks off the bridge. Just curious what anyone else thinks. |

i think the concept of the community coming together is a wonderfull thing. however it seems the city (with budget pobiblems before the festival)is already losing money on the event. how can they justify spending more on renting land? i think they should scale back the event or cancel it until it can be turned into an event that generates money for the city. the next probiblem i have with the festival is the amount of security (police presence) proportant to the civilian s attending. the ratio is such that the city lies vonerable to lawsuits in the event of worse case senarios. last year i saw maximum participation of the junction city police department but zero presence of the seriffs department. the city does fall within the limits of the county the seriffs department is sworn to protect is it not? as taxpayers isnt it resonable for us to exspect at a minimum the officers of the sheriffs department paid a set salary should serve the community during such a large scale event? |

Sundown Sundown Salute is an event which offers more postivies than negatives to Junction City. The feeling of community, the fun, the family entertainment has a value that is truly awesome. It's about quality of life! Its somehing our citizens can look forward to year round, and invite their friends/family to attend. This event also brings in revenue, in terms of folks shopping, eating, and spending money in our City. If they like what they see, they will return and spend more dollars here. In town is the place to have the event...it will bring folks to the heart of JC!

You want ALL of the JC police and ALL of the sheriffs department to patrol a peaceful gathering of the community? What are you? A burglar? While all law enforcement officers are picking bubblegum off their shoes at the park, you want the burglars to know there won't be anyone around to catch them!? You're a NUT. |

I simply think that it would be nice NOT to have the main intersection and all the side streets blocked up.
I would be interested in hearing from business owners as to what effect the Salute has on their businesses...good or bad. I think that with the big fields between JC and Grandview sitting open, that it might be better overall to move it there. |

you have to remember that when you see the Police at the Sundown Salute that is not the shifts that are on duty. They do not take away from the patrol shifts to protect the events. Also I think that the Sheriff's Department should send in Deputies to help the Police OFficers because from what I hear from my friends who work on the force if they are not scheduled to work the road they work everyday during the events. It would probably be cost effective for the CIty to invite the Sheriff's Department or Highway Patrol to help protect the events. I dont know what do you think?

youre right i said work EVERY ONE! and stop ALL police work outside of the park. You saw right thru my plan to burglarize this community. Im the nut to think that we have 2 law enforcement agencies serving this community and each could and should have a presence at this event. its physically impossible to manage personnel from two departments and maintain a traditional patrol force at the same time. i guess ill go target another community with a major event and unleash my master burglary plan there, my plans here have been foiled. |

The sheriff has to patrol ALL of Geary county 24-7. If you want him and his deputies to come to every celebration and tea party in Junk City, he wouldn't be able to provide a timely response to those people who call for help from the fringes of the county. However, if you want to put on a tin badge and call yourself "Sheriff" and walk around, feel free to do so! The police will even let you write phony "tickets" if you promise to drool on yourself and walk around with your tongue hanging out like a dog. |

i wont have time to pin on a tin badge, my burlary career keeps me far to busy for that. and i spoke ignorantly out of turn i dint realize the sheriffs dept worked 24-7 shifts. i was thinking they might have patrol officers with shifts and even scheduled days off. maybe even some supervisors, some perhaps even on salary. i had originally thought they could use some of the people not scheduled to work that day to help out. but that was before you told me they worked 24-7 shifts. but before i go looking for another community to burglarize let me ask you (since it appears you know everything and im a drooling idiot) how does the JCPD provide officers for the festival? do they stop all other law enforcement in the city and only work the festival? maybe i should keep my crime spree here and hope that the PD is as helpless in managing thier personnel as you are saying the sheriffs department is with managing thiers.

Very little of the money is city money. the committee has fundraisers and donations for most of the costs. |
||||
If you have the celebration out in the middle of a field on the outskirts of town, it defeats one of the best purposes of the event...to bring people into our fine City. |

they work 12 hrs shifts like the pd and they could provide several deputies which are off some of those days to assist. I mean come on they only have 4 deputies on the road during a shift anywayz not much difference from the PD. There are things called detectives that help with the pd's and the high ups do it to. This could be done with the Sheriff's Dept. or what about the Highway patrol they provide several hundred troopers for Country Stampede they can come help.. Or even have Riley County assist or other agencies like K-STATE does when they have football games, we have several PD Officers that work the K-STATE football games. OR EVEN GRANDVIEW PLAZA WHO IS DEPUTIZED AND COME INTO JC ALOT ANYWAYS LETS PUT THEM TO WORK RIGHT. there is plenty of LEO's in this community to help with the Great festivities and provide safe and efficient protection in the county (when they are not at Sapp Bro's or Handy's) and in the City of Junction City.

when i first visited this site i would have agreed with you INJC. however tony set me straight. i think you should check your facts you see the real truth is the sheriff works 24-7. and if you disagree with that you are a "nut" a "burglar" and need to ask for a "tin badge and drool on yourself". besides the event only attracts the finest people, everyone holds hands and sings kum-bi-ya. consaquently the officers that do work the "tea party" just "pull gum off thier shoes" so whats the point in attempting to maintain any kind of ratio of security personnel to civilians in attendance. |
||||
|
yep your right you are a nut, every law enforcement officer is on duty 24/7 and always will be. it would be great to see the sheriff's dept. out there assisting the pd officers during this festivity, when you have alcohol and partying in one place for soo many days I believe that we could use all the OFFICERS/DEPUTIES AVAILABLE.
|
||||
again INJC originally i would have agreed with you befor tony set me straight on the reality of what we are talking about. i suspect you too may be planning a burglary spree. we are not talking about alcohol and partying in one place for several days. tony pointed out to me that what we are really talking about is "a peacefull community gathering". i think youre just trying to get all the officers and deputies into one place so you can victimize the rest of the community. which is a good thing because as i was making my burglary plans it occured to me that the evenings take should be so great that ill probibly need a partner in crime. |

sundownn salute is city money. tax payers not city

bfd, are you drunk? Or are you just illiterate and uninformed?

The sheriff can authorize VOLUNTEER posse members to patrol the Junk City events while maintaining saturation patrols of the county. Sheriffs do that all the time all over the country. If there's a problem with drunks at the event, simply ban the sale of alcohol and the carrying of alcoholic beverages on the property.
Matthew, you should tell the sheriff you'd like to be sworn in as a posse member for the next Sundown Salute. I'm sure he'll be happy to see you. |
