To be honest there are a lot of rumblings about the upcoming BRAC list. It is rumored that in fact NSBKB. Is on the list. The cost of dredging and the long run the subs must make (80 miles) are the leaving reasons.

We appreciate the billions already invested in Kings Bay. It will make a good new waterfront park for St. Marys. LOL

You folks fail to understand exactly where we are in sub terms. We are roughly 80 miles from the first continental shelf where the water depths each 300+. A sub must remain surfaced and vulnerable until that depth. We are the longest run a sub makes anywhere in the world like that. The dredging cost has been a factor for decades. Only until recently though have money shortages been a reality. As it sits now, the channel costs the US taxpayer roughly $900 million a year to keep its depth. These kind of expenses are a lot easier to sell when you have commercial ports sharing the cost.

Anyone can start a rumor. Only an idiot would believe this one. Kings Bay is the newest base in the Navy. In 2005, the BRAC folks wanted to close Grotton and move many of the commands to Kings Bay. If anything, that is a more likely scenario than Kings Bay closing.
