According to todays Ga Times Union, it seems the joint development authority has stirred some state interest in developing the old abandoned Union Carbide plant site, into a spaceport. Reality, or just another California dream? Does this explain Gov. Deals sudden interest in Camden County? Or, as suggested before, drinking water for thirsty Atlantaa?

If his interest lies in developing the Spaceport, then that is good news indeed! We could become a twin to Cape Canaveral, having both a submarine port, and a spaceport. We might soon be diving deep, and flying high!

The artical mentioned a runway twice as long as the one at St Marys airport, does that mean it would be a joint use facility, public and military? Security would be as great there as at Kings Bay.

St Marys should proceed with caution about investing in such a venture with no guarantee the public would have full use of such a facility. You already have an airport, and like that old saying, a bird in the hand, is worth two in the bush!(no pun intended Greg!)

And would there be room enough at the old barge port there, to accommodate maybe a few cargo vessels as well?

It would be great if such an idea could become real, and not just another scam that has frequently been perpetrated on Camden county.

My understanding of these things is primarily civilian use, not military/govt.

There are already 10 space ports announced,, not sure what the total demand for these things is.

Having said that, I'm very much in favor of anything that would bring good high paying jobs to the area, and the old Thiokol site would be pretty hard to redevelop to much of anything else. As far as barge traffic, booster rockets, launch vehicles and propellants would be the only cargo. They can be kinda bulky, and transporting them up the AICW makes a lot of sense.

Cautious optimism.

Any one who becomes interested or even excited by the spaceport proposition should Google spaceport and see what is being discussed. This would be a non-military, private venture. The nearest spaceport is Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. which is heavily funded and backed by the State of Florida. Would a competing spaceport 50 miles away in Georgia be able to compete? Would another spaceport this close to an existing facility receive FAA backing?

Did the JDA think to ask the Navy at SUBASE their opinion? They don't like having an airport next door. What do they think of a spaceport just across the bay? Does an aborted spacecraft launch falling on base pose as much of a threat as an errant sky diver?

Hey lets take a piece of swamp (Cumberland Harbor)and turn it into a sub disision for semi rich or an abandoned industry site (Gilman Paper Mill)and make it into a resort with hotel, apartments, condos, and shops) or buy an abandoned house (Gilman Boat House) and make it into a conference center. Don't stop me now, I got a million of 'em folks.

There is no negotiating here. The author of the article cited a blog on the interweb saying there was interest and the JDA immediately strokes a fat check.

St. Marys has had it either way. It does not matter if the airport is moved or not. $75 Million is looming over St. Marys there is no way to pay that amount of money back. The Bond People that made the loan should be called on the carpet as well as the ones that voted to put this community into that kind of debt in the first place. They put Bernie Madoff in prison for ponzi scheme. I don't see much difference in what the Bond dealers did when they made a loan knowing it would not be paid off. City is paying the big Bucks to attorneys let them take on the Bond people.

Is this the same David Keating of the JDA that did all the negotiations with the crooked A/C solar panal company? The one that was to fill the old Kraft bag building with hundreds of workers.

US Congress panel blames Corzine for MF Global fall. Corzine a former
co-chairman of Golden Sachs regulators, prosecutors and lawmakers have been looking into the estimated $1.6 Billion in customer funds missing after the firm's collapse.

I don't see much difference in Corzine and the Bond people that approved a loan knowing there was no way to repay it.

I think what has happened in St Marys could be a case to our dilemma.
