If they feel guilty because of what people are saying that is a GOOD thing! Maybe the next time some dang fool idiot will treat their child better! If not, then give that baby to somene that will love him or her - not neglect it. If anyone even LOOKED like they were going to hurt my children they would feel the wrath of God! These are precious gifts - and YOU brought them into the world so now take care of them!

Whoever the adult was that was supposed to be watching the children should be charged with child endangerment and in my own opinion the adult(s) should be charged with murder and rot in prison considering an innocent 4 year old lost his life over someones STUPIDITY.

What in the world is wrong with you? These people lost their child...and now people are going to drag them through hell telling them how bad they are. Things like this happen. They are accidents. That's why they call them that. This could have happened to anyone. I am sure you live a perfect life and have never engaged in risky behavior. Have you ever talked on a cell phone while driving? If so, you can kill a child by not paying attention to the road. Shame on you!!!

And you know, it's idiots like YOU that poo-poo the seriousness of this type behavior which excuses it and trys to make it "OK"! Well, TOOTS, it isn't OK! This is negligence personified and should be punished as such. Sure, they lost their child - but WHY! If they had some one there interested in taking care of this 4 year old then he would still be with us! "Risky behavior' under any circumstances is NOT acceptable - and YOU, you blithering nut case, are trying to make it OK and sluff it off as an accident? No, this was not an accident, it was carelessness, stupidity, and probably souced from booze - that child should not have even been outside in this heat - that alone is abuse! What's wrong with you jerks? Are you ALL crazy?

I myself have a 2 year old and 1 year old. I have 6 brothers and 2 sisters! I would NEVER EVER allow a 12 year old to "watch" ANY child. I agree with Chappie!!! 100%!!! These are babies.... They are gifts!! They get brought into this world and for them to get taken out like this is HORRIBLE! I could NEVER imagine anything happening to my babies!!! Whoever it was watching them... Mom, dad, stepdad, stepmom, grandma, aunt, uncle.... I DON'T CARE... They should be charged with MURDER!!!! Also for this to happen infront of 3 other children makes it even worse. I just wish AN ADULT would have kept a better eye on this child... maybe this wouldn't have happened :(

Don't make the parents/grandparents feel bad?? Excuse me, they NEED to feel bad. Because of their irresponsible, careless, reprehensible behavior, a small child is DEAD. They SHOULD feel bad. And the other children need counseling and perhaps a safe place to stay until their conditions can be proven safe ( if this hasnt already happened). Hopefully the right people will be held accountable for this crime. And yes, I do realize it is a tragedy, but it is a true crime, none the less.

A child has lost his life. If the parents/ grandmother arent going through HELL grieving over this then nothing you people are saying will make a difference. Hug your children a couple of times today and tell them you love them, and THANK GOD they are safe. My condolences to the family.

Why the hell isn't there fences around the spillway to keep the kids from playing there. I realize that the grandparents are at fault for not supervising the children, but the park needs to be held responsible too. From what I have read here kids have been playing there for years. Why hasn't it been addressed? It is obvious that everyone knows about it. It's just plain irresponsibility on the grandparents and the park. My heart goes out to the baby involved.

Theres fences on the east side by 9th street. Thats where the spillway is Im not sure about the 6th street side. I know there is a playground right there, so that may have been a factor. A body of water is going to draw kids to it though. It was intended as a retention pond to stop the habitual flooding of Wood River. The whole area is an old river bed. Oh, its "Grandparent" not grandparent"s", because nobody here has any teeth and we all live in trailers and we all share a girlfriend named Candy.

Ok, let's not make this about Wood River and the "poor white trash", because trust me, I have seen it and much more in other neighboring towns, including the good 'ol Eville. There are many people that live in WR that have been there for many years that are very much upstanding citizens that were/are part of it's heritage, when business was booming, Shell and Amoco offered many jobs to even those of you who came from other towns, such as Eville...so focus on the real tragedy....the irresponsibility of the care taker of these children, because trust me oh high and mighty in Eville....stupidity lives EVERYWHERE, which you just proved!!

I have rode through Alton/Woodriver lots of times and seen 4-6 year olds crossing streets, riding bikes and all without adult supervision...Yes it happens in every city but still does not make it right...Parents/Grandparents or whoever is suppose to be responsible for small children need to start being held responsible for their neglect..

Small children can not be left alone..Inside or Outside...Why is it no one questions this until a child dies or is kidnapped????????

My family was at the ball diamond when all of this happened. My sons (which are 11) seen the sirens and walked down towards the spillway. I promptly returned them back not knowing the tradegy of the situation. Once we started getting word of what happened, all I could think is what is this was my son? What is one summer day he just never returned? As we left the ball diamond I was amazed at the number of people that wanted to watch. Most of them knowing what outcome would likely be. It made me literally sick and I wanted to get as far away from seeing any of it. I hate to place blame as I am not a perfect parent, but I would move heaven and earth to keep my sons safe! WHOMEVER was responsible for those kids ( and it was NOT the other siblings) should be held accountable. They should have to know what that baby felt and how scared he had to have been.

My question is where the HELL were the parents. I am a mother of 2 adults and a grandmother of a 4 year old and another grand baby on the way. The first priority is WATCH the children. He was 4 years old playing by water. I hope the parents are charged with something.
