PURE's past accomplishments and goals are laudable. Despite your expertise on the matter of school funding, I must respectfully disagree. The taxpayers of Illinois do not trust the State in any way which takes control of schools and their funding from local districts and places it in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats given their track record. I also do not find it appealing to swap property taxes for a sales tax increase, resulting in the residents of numerous school districts paying even less for their children's education than they already do and shifting even more of the funding burden to everyone else. As you know, less affluent districts generate significantly less local revenue, which is made up by the rest of the taxpayers of this state and more affluent districts receive very little from the state. Throwing money at a problem rarely solves anything but this may be only one small part of the larger agenda as there is talk of legislation that would allow any resident of a city greater than 500,000 have full autonomy to enroll his or her child in any school district in the state of Illinois, the ultimate goal of which is readily transparent. Now 2,000 kids who reside outside of the New Trier school district show up to register at a school that already has 4,000 students. Funny how Barrington and Naperville, among others, manage to provide a great education and generate high test scores on a measly $10,000 per student.
