If my son plays Junior Varsity in the 8th grade will he not be able to play this same sport his senior year? I have been told that anything you play in 8th grade does not effect your 4 years of Varsity Sports and then I have been told it does? Someone explain this to me.

I graduated in 2008 and played JV ball my 8th grade year and got to play on varsity my 9th-12th grade year.Unless they have changed the rules since I was playing he should be fine.

some people are acting like if he plays JV then if "anyone is watching closely" they could say something and he would be ineligible his senior year and these are teachers who help coach. I just don't know whether to let him or not because I don't want him to screw up his senior year because of some over eager coaches.???

A lot of Varsity players have played football since they were in elementary school. I don't think that letting him play JV would cause him to be able not to play but if you are still unsure I would contact the VHSL

The fact your son played JV in eighth grade will have no effect on his eligibility as a senior, although the fact your son will be 23 years old in 12th grade will affect his eligibility

The Rule that you are talking about with an 8th Grader Playing JV, is that a student may only be listed on the Master Elegibility List and play Junior Varsity Level one time as an 8th Grader.

Where as... If a player holds back in the 8th Grade, he or she on records with the school are in the 8th grade twice. The student may only play one of the two years of Junior Varsity Level.

The player can play 8th Grade or Middle School Level (If offered, as it is not VHSL Sanctioned).

The other rule, students are not elegible if their 19th birthday falls before August 1st.

If you have specific questions reguarding elegibility talk to your head football coach and/or high school principal.

Thank you to everyone who actually had a real answer, I appreciate it and to Life Coach--honey you need to get a life. VHSCA Coach, Thank you that is where I was getting confused because I believe my son is going to hold back this year and I think that is where all of this is coming from with all of the other people saying he can't play JV this year. Thanks.

Did he hold back in 8th grade? That's what my son is wanting to do. He will be 16 when he starts his senior year and my husband thinks that holding back is the answer for his age and also for sports purposes because he is a pretty good ballplayer.

No it does not affect it his senior year. You are only allowed to play 4 years of Varsity. Your son shouldn't be affect at all.

You should call the principal or the athletic director at the school, the rules on holdbacks have changed.

I have two questions can you reclassify your senior year but instead of going to private school just reclass in public school? And if allowed will I still be able to play sports since I haven't played 4 years of varsity basketball just one year but it was jv and i havent played football yet either and I will not be 19 before either one of these tryouts

Virginia and VHSL has an 8 semester rule. You only get 8 semesters to graduate and praticipate in sports. It starts 9th grade year. If you repeat 9th grade - then by the time he/she is a senior you will have completed the 8 semesters of athletic eligibility. Meaning: Sitting out as a Senior.
I beleive that's the rule.

Thanks to each of you for helping me with the same situation. My son's middle school didn't have a football team so it was either pop warner or high school. We choose high school. And he did well. I guess at 6ft 250+ offense, defense, and special teams trained he was ready to play. He has been playing football since he was 4 years old nerf ball, wrestling, and track/field. And I require honor roll advanced classes along with band and spanish to keep him grounded. I am proud since 2 of his eight grade classes will allow him to enter high school with 2 credits. The joy is now he will be able to play 4 years of high school football.

My question is can Junior and Seniors legally play on JV teams? Especially older Juniors? And is there a way to report favoritism from a coach who seems to play friends' kids before others - who have more experience and are more talented. I realize this is a difficult charge to prove, but I assure you, it is happening. Also, is it a good thing for a coach to make a Senior captain of the Varsity team and a freshman the co-captain. What is up with THAT? Weird. Finally, this question: if your team loses each and every game, and each team is low on players (less than 12) would you, as a coach go ahead and play/rotate each player so everyone could have an opportunity to play. THEY ARE LOSING EACH GAME. Have mercy. Please send the VHSL rule if able...

The rule is that your 4 years of eligibility have to be on a varsity roster. Playing JV does not count as using a year of eligibility. He is perfectly fine

My daughters private school only has varsity softball because they don't have enough kids for a JV. If she plays varsity softball in 8th grade and transfers to a public school will this cost her a yr of eligibility?
