So, my wife and I are considering moving to Winthrop from cambridge.
I know that there is flooding and the airport noise, but is there anything else I should know about the town.
Crime? How safe is it?

I knew a family from Cambridge who moved to Winthrop and were unhappy here -- the thought the people were simple minded and boring here. I like the people here, but they're not intellectuals like the people in Cambridge, and they're not super liberal either.
Do you have kids? If so, STAY IN CAMBRIDGE!!! Winthrop schools have had huge cuts and classes have 30+ kids in them now. Music was cut. There is not gifted education in Winthrop either.
If you don't have kids, and like going to the beach a lot, then move to Winthrop! Just don't move to a part of town in the direct path of a runway. Otherwise you will SUFFER from the noise and it will be very bad on your health, especially your lungs if you have any kind of respiratory condition.

locals take on winthrop is very accurate. If you'd like to see more go to www.myrevere.net go under the cities heading and just select Winthrop you'll get a chance to see our "dirty laundry" there is a very active forum, just remember I said active not exactly accurate. But, it is amusing.

I've lived her 18 years. I have a master's degree as does my husband. My neighbors have college degrees. My kids go to public school and are doing well. I do wish they had a gifted and tallented program. The music teacher was re-hired a week after he was cut. Many of my kids' teachers live in town. Gives meaning to "it takes a village ..."
Lots of small town intrigue and politics, that's for sure. Check out forum mentioned. Come visit us next Thursday (the 11th) and pick up the local newspaper. It will be the graduation edition and you'll be able to read the kids' speeches and about what colleges they are going to attend.

I like living in Winthrop. Life is certainly more relaxing here. There is NO rush hour traffic, unless you need to drive your kid to the Fort Banks Elementary School in the morning. No one honks their horn at you or treats you rudely in public (why we left Medford). We go to the beach for evening walks. We go to Deer Island to get exercise. The quality of life here is better than it was in Medford. But it is like a small town. People will gossip about you, and they will know your business. But most of the people are really nice. You can get a steal in Governor's Park (the condos are almost 50% there now) but be sure to get a top floor unit, or the noise will really aggravate you. The elementary schools are very good. Not too sure about the Middle School and High School though. If your kid is gifted and ambitious, you might want to pick a town with better schools, unless you have the time and money to do enrichment activities with your kid (ie. MIT has a cheap middle school evening program for gifted kids, New England Conservatory has a music program for gifted kids, etc).

I also forgot to mention that you can get a house in Winthrop on the ocean for a very reasonable price. I don't know anywhere within 15 minutes of downtown Boston where you can do that!

I Just bought a house in Winthrop could not be more happy. I have 2 kids and the elementary school is fine but for HS I will prob go private it is deplorable. I have a 45 second walk to the beach. Its a relaxing town most of my neighbors have degrees and are working class people. It is like an island though and I hope you like tunnels because thast how you'd get anywhere.
