Now we cab be rid of the toxic abandoned Cannon Street power plant in New Bedford ,Massachusetts !

Toxic New Bedford Power Plant

New Bedford, As the Legislature entered the home stretch of the 1996 session, local lawmakers made a final push to win state aid to remove a toxic power plant. The House in 1996 passed a plan that contains $300,000 to study the possibility of converting the toxic abandoned New Bedford power plant into a casino.

Most private or nonprofit groups are unable to build any project on the site of Commonwealth Electric’s closed Cannon Street power station. The cost of the toxic removal project is put at above 60 million.

Massachusetts has failed to secure EPA Brownfields Redevelopment Funds for removal of the Cannon Street Power Station.

The US EPA’s New England Regional office is also an integral part of the Brownfield Support Team. The publicly owned 29 acre power station has been let off the hook or has slipped through the cracks as one of the most contaminated sites in the country.

The cleanup documents for the power plant are said to weigh around twenty pounds. Lets get rid of the toxic plant !

Gov. Deval Patrick, a supporter of a New Bedford resort casino, immediately called the slots proposal a potential deal-breaker.Patrick was quick to push a casino .“The concern is this: we get the casinos — and we need the jobs. The jobs come with the casinos.”

The only issue for New Bedford is we have got to question the decision by Gov Patrick to build a 36 million dollar ocean wind turbine port (New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal) and casino behind a sixty years old hurricane barrier. The Army Corps of engineers certifies the barrier every year according to 1960s standards .The same mistake was made with the levies in New Orleans ! The old standards were used to save money .

New Bedford is out of the question for any new industry behind the old manually operated barrier .In fact in 2009 the barrier was in the stuck open position for almost three months !

Toxic casinos? The could not be anymore toxic on their own without this to boot. Do not count on any jobs, you may get one but then it will go to an illegal immigrant or someone who they can pay less. One company is from the Bahamas that is part of one of the casinos. Do not think these companys are all just Indian owned far from it.
