Top 61 Schools in Mass and our fearless leader FFF High School isn't one of them.
Shame on you.

Five days since this was posted and no comments? I guess issues such as EHS Baseball and Softball are more important to you people than education It's Bread and Circus, distractions by those in power to keep the people in ignorance of the leaders' incompetence and failures as educators.
Check the above list of schools, and you'll find Malden and Revere on the list of top high-schools in Mass, but EHS is nowhrere to be found. Everett's level of competition is now Chelsea and Lawrence.
Your silence is deafening. Just the way Fred wants it.

What do you want us to do about it? Of course it's unfortunate but over half of our students are foreigners who don't speak English in their homes. Do you really expect them to do well on MCAS exams? It really is unfair to blame Mr. Foresteire or the teachers. The only alternative is to send you children to private schools (like the Mayor does).

And pay tuition to learn.

Students that don't speak English will have difficulty learning but they try. Students who speak English also have to try to learn the subject matter that is being taught. They have to do their homework and be prepared for class; it's a 2-way street. Don't expect to be spoon-fed on learning

REMEMBER:
If you fail to prepare then be prepared to fail. Once students graduate from high school and enter the business world, they will son learn the meaning of failing to prepare or they soon will be out of a job.

Everett, you run out this same lame excuse every time this issue is brought up. Have you driven through Revere or Malden lately? These cities have large non-English speaking populations, yet they are much more successful than Everett in educating their students and preparing them for life.
Ratings such as these published in Boston Magazine and US News and World Report are based on statistical data and not on the propaganda spewed forth in local newspapers which are afraid to bite the hand that feeds them.
It seems that the most important ratings to FFF and to you Everett are the Football Ratings each fall. Pitiful.

Not a lame excuse, but a fact. As I stated above, what do you want us to do about it? The only options are to pay for a private education or move. As far as the football team, I'm really not interested in them.

The issue is not what language is spoken at home but at what age the child is introduced into the school environment.

Everett,
What should you do about it? Perhaps you should study how the more successful school systems are educating students who speak different languages. Perhap Everett School Administrators should stop brow-beating teachers who fail students who do nothing in class or don't bother to come to school.
What should you do about it? Perhaps it's time to question the leadership in the School Dept. You sound like Deval Patrick making excuses for Olga Roche at a time of crisis.
What you should not do about it is to accept it. The cost to your children is too high

How come you don't blame the parents? Shouldn't they be responsible for their kids who "don't both to come to school"? I think the administration and the teachers work very hard and put up with more than they should. Don't even get me started on absentee landlords who allow multi-families to overcrowd our schools. There's plenty of blame to go around.

Taxpayers, stand proud! You may be assured that no other school system in the country is expending so much of the school department's revenue on newspaper advertising. The ads this week in each of the 3 papers are huge. What other governmental body showcases its system and especially its leader, the school superintendent, in the local press week after week? If the city manages to snare a casino within its borders, the amount of revenue will increase dramatically which would allow the school committee to spend even more freely. What about a daily magazine highlighting the devotion of the school board members on a regular basis? The possibilities are endless. For the time being, however, Everett's citizens will have to just be content with a school system ranking number one in the category of wasting of taxpayers money in the U.S.A.

What to do about it?

Hold FFF responsible for the terrible results.

Hold The Mayor responsible for not.standing up to FFF and demanding better results.

The Man-Boy Mayor has a job to do,
and its more than just lining the pockets of his friends

I don't like FFF either, but let's not go there. The School Committee is held responsible for this mess, not the mayor.

Has anyone been to Framingham lately? There is a huge immigrant population, especially Brazilian. Cambridge? Malden? Roxbury? Many schools in this area have a lot of non-native speakers. Everett is not unique. Letting the School Board and FFF off the hook is absurd.

And the "what are we supposed to do about it" attitude is the whole problem with this entire city. There are a million things to be done. How about trying to shake up the school committee? How about advocating for tougher curriculum? How about some of us just being active in the community like some cities have it?
