I'm glad to see that some people really care for their horses. I agree that giving them up is not an option and if it takes an extra job, then so be it. I can't understand why the hay is so high in that area. The costs have only gone up 50 cents per bale in northern Indiana and auction houses are a good place to look these days for the farmers' overstock (they clear out their barns so that they can store the newly baled hay).. maybe a discount bargain basement sort of thing, eh? I can't figure out why they would all be going to the bio fuel stuff when the E85 seems to be flopping with its high prices (because big oil got their paws into it) and lower mpg than regular gas. The Ag people are telling farmers NOT to figure more than a year at a time when it comes to corn production as the market could come crashing down.. why don't they listen? I'm not usually a promoter of TV but they need to get up earlier and watch it a little bit more ... like the farm reports. At any rate, I'd be looking around at the local farmers and when cutting season comes, contract for whatever amount of hay your horses eat and ask the farmer to store it for you.. get it as you need it. I did that years ago and it worked out great.. these days, I'm growing my own. That way it's up to me whether my horses eat, and I won't be a victim of the greedy people who possess the hay that the horse owners need. Another thing, I see semi truckloads heading east and south all the time on the expressway (I 94), coming out of MN and WI. Again, there's hay but you have to take time and energy to look for it. smile
