"Take, for example, this country's worst nuclear accident, which occurred at Three Mile Island in March 1979. The news media, along with some help from Hollywood, demonized nuclear power to the extent it was impossible for utilities to consider a nuclear power plant."

I don't know about the "demonizing" of nuclear power, all I know is about a family friend who lived near Three Mile Island. They had three healty children, then the accident occurred - they had two more children - both born with multiple severe birth defects.

I realize that's a case study - not a scientific experiment, but there's many families out there like that. The potential for great harm is inherent to nuclear power, and therefore renders it useless for general consumption.
