Another major smear editorial passed off as a page 1 news story. Typical 'woman scorned' Sentinel tactic.

We need to "unmask" the trial lawyers and list the top "dirty dozen" who put their interests above the good of the community. Their actions on Communter rail is a travisty against all Central Floridians.

The rail system would never have worked without East-West rail arteries. A single line simply wouldn't have been viable, just as a single automobile artery isn't viable. The current bus system isn't adequate to support the capacity required to handle incoming traffic from the outlying areas, and with all the money spent to get the rail system going, none would have been available for ancillary systems.
The commuter rail, as proposed, would have quickly become an albatross. The shame and horror of it is that the government has already spent $41M and failed to see that elephant in the room.
Live and learn, I suppose.

Is this for the good of the community: Pay CSX 1/2 billion dollars to use their tracks, pay 300 million to improve and repair their tracks, allow csx to continue to use tracks and make a nice profit, and then give csx immunity from suit if poor maintenace of their tracks causes train to crash? This may be a good use of your tax dollars, but it is not a good use of my tax dollars.

You want to work on improving transportation in Orlando and Orange County? Put the money into creating interchanges versus time consuming intersections with aggrevating long traffic signals. Teach your traffic police that the best way to prevent accidents isn't to hide in the bushes with radar guns but to get out during rush hours and expedite traffic flow so their aren't long, aggrevating delays at old fashioned intersections. Little towns are determned to slow treaffic down, big towns learned long ago to get the Hell out of the way and if they are present it is to wave it to go faster. One cop on the side of the road with its lights going can create a half dozen serious crashes.

Light rail (like every other rail project in Florida), because of the well connected "Road Lobby" in this state.
This group of contractors and developers have been picking the pockets of Florida tax payers for decades.
If you have a doubt you need only check the lobbyist records in Tallahassee. See who spends the dollars and gets the access.
Our very own Expressway crew is example enough the see how the powers that be view you and me. They build roads to get more cash out of us. The 408 clearly does not exist to get us safely to and from work.
Just my opinion....

Lack of leadership is a problem in central Florida. We have federal backing but state lacks. Spend a few minutes with Dan Webster and you will realize this older gentleman probably doesn't care about the future or commuter rail. Probably does care about Daniel Webster Parkway, which is the old model that is responsible for building the sprawl we now see, the same sprawl that sucks down our communities by spread our infrastructure too thin. If this is not fixed in the next couple of weeks, Orlando will be on a black list across the country in regards to development. A glaring reflection that a city like Orlando does not need. We all didn't realize how important Jeb Bush was to have in leadership. Crap like this did not happen. This state is going nowhere fast and it doesn't have to be that way.

Our tax dollars will be spent anyways and not where you want them to be. THis project would have not only helped ease traffic concerns but also lessen the demand for gas. At the same time it would have reduced emissions. But Sen. Dockery did not want trains through her downtown Lakeland which by the way has no downtown. Her selfishness has made Florida look bad in the eyes of the Fed govt. Way to team up with the trial lawyers who are the scum of the earth. WE need better infrastructure for transportation. Everyone should realize what Dockery and her buddy Villalobos just accomplished=nothing. This will not go away. The liability issue was mirrored on the tri-rail agreement in south florida. I guess Villalobois only wanted the agreement in his region and not ours. I hope this rail system goes through so I can see Dockery relaize how little she means to the state of Florida. Thanks for representing Lakeland which is the armpit of Central Florida.

Commuter rail would never have worked well. Look here in Atlanta, where the MARTA train system has only two directions--north/south and east/west. Anyone who can afford to drive does, because why take a train that makes you then walk blocks and blocks to get to your office, school or medical building, especially in the southern heat. No one does.

This is such a poorly written story. As usual, the Sentinel is desperate to blame whoever they can dream up when in fact this project was a lose lose for taxpayers throughout Florida to begin with.
I think greed would've been a more accurate description of why this didn't pass. The deck was clearly stacked against the taxpayers and bravo to those who voted it down. This scheme was all about enriching CSX's pockets.

People are NOT going to park their cars to ride the rail with the dregs of humanity anymore than they are going to park their cars to ride the bus with the dregs of humanity.
The commuter-rail system was a waste of money that would have never worked.

I do not understand why Mica was so bent on buying the railsfrom CSX anyway. There are so many more viable alternatives to creating Light Rail in Central FL, that would service a larger area than the original proposal. I think this was about just getting a lot of people paid.

Who is referring to special interests and selfishness? IMO that was on the Commuter Rail side too. It is time to elect people who are going to work for the residents of Florida, not special interest groups. Look for candidates in November who are not getting huge donations from special interest groups.

Lee Constantine probably supports commuter rail as an alternative to getting arrested on another DUI charge. Call John Morgan to try to call off the dogs just like his last arrest when he begged Maitland PD to call Sheriff Beary to get him off the hook. What a bum.
