As many of you know, on the May 8th ballot is NC Amendment One. This amendments stated purpose is to place into our constitution language banning same-sex marraige like all of our southern neighbors. Whether or not you agree with this, there are some things that you need to know before voting for this amendment.
As of the 2010 census, there were aproximately 220,000 couple in NC who stated their relationship as a civil union or domestic partnership. Roughly 90% of those couples are heterosexual. Though I do not have the statistic, one can infer that a portion of them will have children.
The language of Amendment One has some areas that are troubling to anyone who reads them closely. While it does define marraige as between one man and one woman, it also goes further. One phrase in particular could very easily lead to unintended repercussions.
"Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State." This wording could easily void all civil unions, not only same-sex relationships. Were that to be the case, thousands of your neighbors, men, women and children could lose many benefits and protections. Insurance coverage and many others would certaianly be effected.
Even the Amendments author now admits that this will most certainly be repealed within 20 years. If that is the case, then what purpose does it really serve? It seems to me, that ay best, it makes life more difficult for a segment of our neighbors for a short period of time.
One other thing that troubles me is the timing of the vote on such an important issue. I have to ask why our representatives chose to place this in a Primary, rather than the upcoming general election? Could it be that they are counting on the lower voter turnout normal in primaries?
I ask that you do a little research for yourselves before voting on May 8th. Amendment One will take important benefits from many of your neighbors. This will effect, children, senior citizens and all others who, for one reason or another chose to live in a relationship other than Marraige.
Thank you for your time.

I am disappointed in the amount of propaganda, misinformation, and fear tactics being circulated throughout the media regarding this proposed legislation.
There are currently 30+ states that have adopted marriage amendments. I have not yet been able to find any data to support that anyone has lost coverage or protection as a result of such measures.
I lived in TX for 20+ years, and both my company as well as my husband's offered Domestic Partner as well as Common Law Marriage Benefits and CONTINUE to do so. Furthermore, gay couples are very accepted in this area of the country and many choose to move there! The economy is booming, and there are numerous openly gay churches, bars, etc. I felt everyone lived in harmony there, respectful of others' beliefs and values.
There should be a separation of church and state. However, I believe this legislation has been proposed simply due to the increase of legislation supporting same-sex marriage (which should also NOT be up for debate by the state).
It is unfortunate that we have to vote for or against what marriage should be. However, if states have allowed citizens to vote for same-sex marriage, citizens should also be allowed to vote against. That is the beauty of a democracy.

Interestingly enough, it seems that every thing I see telling people to educate themselves points them to information on the protect familys website. Well, if you were really interested in having people educate themselves on this amendment, it seems only logical that you would send them to a resource from both sites. A lawyer from Campbell University laid out the meaning of the amendment here: http://www.voteformarriagenc.com/wp-content/u... and it was linked to the vote for marriage website. I would encourage people to read that material in addition to the other material. Personally my opinion is this...... gays want to be able to be married but it's against the law, however they know that a judge can claim that the law is unconstitutional if it went high enough...... so they will make up a bunch of scare tactics to ensure the amendment doesn't get passed. Well, no matter those scare tactics, I know I am voting FOR amendment one. I believe one man one woman equals a marriage and nothing more. And I do NOT care that it hurts hetero couples either b/c marriage should be the ONLY recognized legal union. And do NOT for one second assume that all married people are able to get insurance through their partners work b/c that is not the case. Another thing I believe that the ones that preach tolerance are the least tolerant of all. I think that a lot of people who are planning on voting FOR the amendment are laying low and those against it will be surprised at how many people are against gay marriage.

Focusonthefacts. I haven't seen any data as well. My concern is more that anyone might pose benefits from this Amendment. Granted, it may not happen..but if a single child loses insurance..is it worth it? I think not

Can you comprehend FOREVER?
I don't think so.

On the winning side. No matter your religious belief this Amendment has the very real potential to do unintended harm to many of your neighbors.
In NC it is already illegal for members of the same sex to marry. Amendment One does not change anything in that regard.Somesame-sex couples, approximately 20,000, enjoy domestic partner privileges through their employers which could be lost. Of course, so could the 200,000 couples in heterosexual Domestic Partnerships. Those numbers are from the 2010 census.
Perhaps the prospect of a few hundred children losing health insurance or a couple of hundred victims of domestic violence losing protections that they currently enjoy doesn't bother you. I for one could not sleep at night knowing that even ONE of my fellow citizens lost something so important in an attempt to ban something that is already illegal.
