Although I never read his book about the Connecticut murders, Brian McDonald, in a recently published interview, mentioned that if ever there was a hero in these murders, it was Jennifer Hawke-Petit. Jennifer showed courage down to the horrible end. Even when she was “safely” inside the bank and temporarily away from Steven’s reach (who was watching her from the car), the thought of scampering to her own safety and directly calling the police while her family was at the hands of these monsters never entered her mind. Jennifer’s thoughts and instincts, down to the very end, were to immediately go back and be with her family.
The two scumbags never cared for Jennifer’s courage and heroism. The two scumbags never had the soul to snap out of their monstrosity. The two scumbags never gave a hoot for Hayley and Michaela … they couldn’t care less how horrible the pain by which they killed them would be (by burning them to their deaths). Evil selfishness and lust were their only motivation (not only on that night … but throughout their lives).
It is so frustrating to now see all the legal loopholes and protection that these two scumbags are enjoying. The reality is that the legal process will ensure that they are given their due process … the legal process will ensure that they are declared “guilty” only if it is beyond reasonable doubt. In fact, the system will ensure that they are given all the comforts in their cells … otherwise, their lawyers can whistle about inhumane treatment.
I do not post this to question the way the legal process ensures justice … it is not anyone’s fault. It is simply the unfair reality. This is the frustrating reality. And frustrating as it is for all of us, I can only imagine the frustration that Dr. Petit must be going through.
Frustrating as the legal process is, I do hope that people will always know the truth about these two scumbags and remember them for who they are. I have seen so many posts and threads that try to sugar-coat the character of these monsters … for instance, I’ve seen so many posts that try to mislead us into thinking that Joshua is an honest person.
No one really knows what will become of these cases … even if these monsters get sentenced to death, Connecticut’s legislature may abolish the death penalty.
I am certain that Dr. Petit is aware of these frustrating realities. I am certain that he knows about the possibility of the death sentence being abolished. About all the delays and loopholes that are at the arsenal of the defense team. But this does not stop him from fighting for justice for his family.
I do not know how the trial for Joshua and Steven will end, but I do hope that they will be remembered and reviled for the monsters that they are.
And I also hope to see that the Petits (Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela) will always be remembered and loved for their goodness and quiet heroism. Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela are proofs that something good can in fact last forever.
