All communities need a safe home for many people in transition. Everyone deserves the opportunity to turn their lives around. We in the residential neighborhoods do not want the half way houses near our local library, child care centers and homes where young family's are afraid to allow their children out to play. Times like this, many more places may be required. We need a better solution. How about a restored hotel?

The alcoholic and drug abusers who will live in these houses are no more prone to violence or disturbing acts than those like-wise afflicted individuals who already live in the neighborhood and are not yet in a situation where they are seeking help. If you were to really know who in your neighborhood were so afflicted, you might be shocked by the sheer number in this town. The people seeking treatment are not the problem, it is those who would keep them from treatment that are......

Shame on those people who post negative comments against the AGAPE House !!! You ought to be ashame of yourselves !! Back in year 2000, the City of Winslow denied the homeless shelter because of misinformations and negative attitudes towards other people. There were 66 people on the streets in Winslow and now since then 35 people have died out on the streets of Winslow because of alcoholism and numerous unsolved murders. While you all sleep in nice cozy and warm beds at night. What about if this was your own brothers or sister or relatives !!! God Bless you all...

You are right on about negative/untrue comments and accusations from ignorant people. Alcoholics and addics need a good safe place to call home while seeking treatment.
And you are right about the shut down homeless shelters in Winslow. In 2004, the best working cold night shelter was shut down by the powers that be in city government. In the 4 weeks after that, at least three people died of exposure in the very cold weather of that year. Needless cruelty directed against those least able to protect themselves.

We tried many different approaches to the street person problem here in town, including trying to obtain an abandoned/unused building. None of the buildings available was up to code, including several of the old hotels. They were so bad, that even if they were donated, it was too expensive to bring them up to minimal habital code. Would you perhaps like to donate the money to renovate one of these buildings?
Thought not.
You are part of the problem if you will not be part of the solution and also throw obstacles in the way of those who can help.

Rehab never works. Its those damn cooks we need to go after. Most of them are white males in the snowflake and white mountain area. Meth is different than other drugs, Its not beeing brought in through the border contrary to popular belief. Its being made in our very own community.

Funny how the city of Winslow didnt do the right thing and tell Agape House they didnt need a conditional use permit. The home owners can rent thier home to anyone they want. Its against Federal Acts to discriminate!

Pete H., interesting that when they wanted to place this very similar structure in your neighborhood, you were very angry and against it.

Make sure to leave the tenants your home number so that when we have our adverse weather you can drive them to the other side of town to attend the mandatory meetings.

Nice to know government still works in corruption so that they change the residential zoning laws to reflect what is needed for the CUP to get the recovery house in.

I was not against it. I spoke at a City Council meeting and at a P&Z meeting in defense of alcoholics in recovery and sober living homes. In fact, I may make a rental I own into a sober living home when the current tenant moves. In fact, I put an ad in the Scoop here in Winslow and a letter to the editor of the Holbrook Tribune stating that I thought those against this home were acting like a lynch mob. I likened the goings on to the classic movie "To Kill A Mocking Bird". A lot of folks here in Winslow know that I myself am an alcoholic in recovery.

Also, no zoning laws were changed. Agape House found, with some help, that they dont need a CUP at all. Anyone can rent a home they own at will. No special permissions/variances are required, and that is what Agape House has done.

I think MOM from Denver, CO has me confused with someone else.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Capricorn

You're feeling edgy as Mars moves into reverse, and it won't be long before people start to get on your nerves. You might get very irritated by someone's funny little habits, yet feel you daren't say anything in case you go overboard. Or you could get very annoyed when someone blurts out something that was supposed to be a secret but which quickly becomes common knowledge.
