Bad news for taxpayers. Economic changes are unpredictable
and to have a tax that never ends is not wise.
Vote "NO" on this 1/2% sales tax with collection to remain forever.
This never-ending tax would allow the department to increase employee benefits and salaries every year, while the taxed people would be growing poorer and poorer.

In addition to this tax, the sheriff has the Police Jury "studying the feasibility" of building a prison You know how gung-ho the jury is to build things ( at our expense). Remember the tax for the new library. Well, the prison will cost us even more tax dollars.

Let's see: This Fall we are being asked for school board taxes, police jury taxes a sheriff's tax and before long it will be another tax to build a prison .
We have got to stop this somewhere. Vote 'NO" until government resigns in spending. the elderly on fixed incomes, the unemployed and underemployed cannot afford all these taxes.

The Sheriff is elected to the Sheriff's Office. Why not set up a Sheriff's Department that is civil service?

Shall the Parish of Winn, Louisiana, be authorized to collect a tax of 1% for 10 years, on the sale at retail, the use, the lease or rental, the consumption, and the storage for use or consumption, of tangible property and on sales of services in the Parish, as defined by law,(an estimated $1,774,000 expected to be collected from the Tax for an entire year), with the proceeds of the Tax (after paying the costs of collecting the Tax), to be divided as follows; 60% to the Parish for constructing, maintaining, and operating a solid waste collection and disposal system for the Parish, with the balance of the proceeds for maintaining and supporting the Winn Parish Courthouse and providing other Parish services, and 40% to the City of Winnfield for providing solid waste collection and disposal, including the operation, maintenance and improvement of its Waste Compaction Station, and for providing other municipal services?

This stinks! It's nearly 2 million dollars a year from the wallets of people in this parish!
$17,740,000.(seventeen million seven hundred forty thousand) over the life of the tax! Will it end in 10 years? I say probably not. How many tax increases will be proposed in the future? It never ends. I'm voting NO.

That's the Police Jury tax. It's on the October 19 ballot.

The sheriff's tax is on the November 16 ballot. So are the School Board taxes.

Here's the language for the sheriff's tax:

Shall the Law Enforcement District of the Parish or Winn, State of Louisiana (the "District"), be authorized to levy and collect a tax of one-half of one percent (1/2 %)(the "Tax"),(an estimated $900,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for an entire year), in perpetuity, from and after January 1, 2014, upon the sale at retail, the use, the lease or rental, the consumption, and storage for use or consumption, of tangible personal property and on sales of services in the District, with the proceeds of the Tax (after paying the reasonable and necessary costs and expenses of collecting and administering the Tax) to be dedicated and used for the purpose of providing additional support for the Winn Parish Sheriff's Department (the "Department"), including but not limited to, acquiring, improving, maintaining and operating law enforcement facilities, vehicles and equipment and funding general operations of the Department?

The above is the Police Jury tax. Yes, they will ask for another tax to replace this one after it expires in 10 years.
Now the sheriff is asking for another tax in addition to the Police Jury tax.
Shall the Law Enforcement District of the Parish of Winn, State of Louisiana be authorized to levy and collect a tax of one half of one percent ( an estimated $900,000 per year), in PERPETUITY!
This tax is to be collected on sales at retail, the use, the lease or rental, the consumption, and storage for use of consumption of tangible personal property and on sales of services in the district.
Funny how the jury and the sheriff's office don't estimate the sales tax collections the same. At $900,0000 for 1/2% equals $1,800,000for 1%. For 1%-the jury estimates it will grab "only" $1,774,000.
As inflation increases , goods cost more and that increases sales tax we have to pay. Vote against any tax that is placed on us and future generations forever!

Bodie was asking for a 1% tax.
Bodie had been Assessor before he was sheriff; had given tax breaks to his buddies which caused a shortfall in tax collections ( plus what he had stolen while assessor and our D.A. Chris Nevils failed to prosecute him for the charges the state had against him).
Then he went wild as sheriff, because Nevils failed to do his job in prosecuting Assessor Little.
The sheriff's department got in bad financial condition for four reasons.(1) Chris Nevils did not prosecute Little on the charges the state had against Assessor Little. Never would Bodie have been able to run, as a felon, for Sheriff if Nevils had done his job. That is the major cause of the problem we have today.(2) Fair taxes were not paid because of favoritism by Bodie to his friends, shorting the sheriff's department by not collecting legal taxes (3)Excessive spending by Bodie which resulted in (4) borrowing lots of money and paying interest.

Winn tax payers will suffer a long time for what was allowed to be swept under the table by the present District Attorney, Chris Nevils.
( remember this next election for D.A.)
The poor/elderly/underemployed people of this parish should not have to empty their wallet of hard-earned money to cover what our D.A. failed to do. Taxpayers should not be responsible now for the follies of our elected officials. Our cost of living is going up everyday; we are not getting raises. We pay enough taxes already and we certainly don't need a tax that has no term limitation; it will be collected FOREVER, IF IT PASSES! We VOTED DOWN BODIE'S TAX, WE CAN VOTE THIS ONE DOWN, TOO. Victory can be ours for us and our families.

The taxpayers will suffer from this debacle for a long time

No more taxes to bail out past corruption in our parish. Vote 'NO" on sheriff's NEW, additional tax. Let them cut back and live with what they already take from us now. We will suffer a long time for reasons given in above post. Taxpayers pockets are just about empty.

Point being Bodie tried to pass an additional sales tax to fund the sheriff's office and this is what the current sheriff is trying to pass, an additional sales tax to fund the sheriff's office.

The current sheriff was out campaigning against the sales tax when Bodie tried to pass it and now he wants us to vote for it. Can you say hypocrite?

VOTE NO! NO NEW TAXES!

This current sheriff ran on a campaign that he could get by on the current budget but now he wants more money. Why can't he do what he promised and get by on the money he has? Sheriff Buddy Jordan was able to get by on that money for years why can't the current sheriff? He needs to keep his campaign promises.

The sheriff thinks he is so smart that he can make us forget Campaign promises he would have cut a deal with the devil to get elected. Now, he like most who we elect to serve us think about building a reelection base and that takes money. Cranford and Bodie are alike in that they want to be the big fish in a little pond. Nothing can be said or done that would convince me that we need to pay more taxes when we were told by the sheriff "I can fix the finances and run the office on the money thats there"

You right Cranford and Bodie are alike in many ways that is the reason Cranford had so many bad things to say about Bodie. When Bodie was sheriff Cranford spent all his time watching the sheriffs office business. He was always running to the Enterprise telling about things he thought they should report. He fought against a tax said it was not needed so why we need it now

We know the Enterprise editor is not going to know about wrongdoings by public officials unless someone tells him. We need alert citizens to keep an eye on how our tax dollars are spent and try to report or get the "news" paper to inform the public. That's how our republic form of government is supposed to work- citizens watching our elected ones-. We need checks and balances.
That's why TOPIX is such an important forum for the people. It is not controlled news as is the paper.
Cranford did his own shady deals prior to becoming sheriff, therefore I didn't vote for him.
Anyone who would have followed Moo Little as sheriff or Assessor had a big hurdle to overcome because that man ripped us all off. It will take years of frugality in governmentto make ends meet. Frugality should be the norm forever.
Blame our district Attorney Chris Nevils for not stopping Bodie Little when the state had malfeasance charges against then ASSESSOR Little, and he dropped the charges.
But no matter what shortfall either office had to surmount, it should not fall on the backs of the hardworking, honest taxpayers to dig deeper into their pockets to pay more to overcome the devastation caused by any and all corrupt persons in public offices.
Vote "NO" to every new and additional tax. We are taxed too much for frivolous things such as a new library for this parish with high unemployment, and lessening population when the libraries (5) are taking too much of our tax dollars.
Vote out all public officials who fail to do their duty ( D.A. Nevils, especially).
Take control of our government and grow a better community with honest, sober, qualified, fair, hard-working individuals serving in public offices.
