Does anyone else have a problem with the changes they have made to our schools lunch program? The government has decided that they know best how to make our kids less obease and more healthy. For instance if they get mashed potatoes they do not get gravey on them. Come on now these are country kids, not bark eating tree huggers from California. Anyone with half a brain knows that the kids don't get fat from school. It is the sitting around at home and not getting any exercise from play that is making them fat. I grew up on the most fattening type of food you could be served. I never had a weight problem.
Once again the government wants to step in and be the parent. I think they need to back off and leave raising our kids to us. Maybe we do need to make changes in the way we do some things, but again it is our business what we do with our kids. Changing the lunches to bland & tastless is not going to do anything but make the kids refuse to eat the food and come home eating the paint off the walls from doing without all day.

Our country has been slowly taken away from us because we comply with all the nonsense edicts of government. It is the parents decision what to feed their children. There needs to be a bombardment of every representative and senator to protest the Obama school program. also contact the local school board and get them involved in repealing the mandate of poor lunches for children. In the meantime , quit paying for those lunches and send a lunch from home for your child.( I know some school children have had perfectly healthy lunches taken from them and the child given "approved" school lunches which were not nearly as healthy). Protest, protest, protest! Don't sit idly by and let government get away with this. Organize parents groups; take action!

I definately agree. I dont have any children in school, mine are all grown but I do have 6 granchildren in school that refuse to eat most of what they serve. This is an outrage to me. I grew up eating school lunches and they never made me fat. In the first place what they serve as school meals is not enough food to cause obesity. It is what goes on at home that causes obesity. Something needs to be done just dont know exactly what would help to change things.

Another thing is that some kids don't have much to eat at home and ARE NOT benefitting from the calorie reduction. Not to mention the fact that they're pretty much forced to eat the food any kid would find not-good because they can't go home and pig out because there's nothing there to pig out on. It seems like they would feel like it's just one more degradation - along with cheap uniforms, embarrassment at having to hand in a free or reduced lunch form in front of the whole class, not having all the "stuff" their classmates have, etc. Also, if they aren't eating;whether from being from a poor family or just not wanting to eat bad food; their grades are going to suffer. They'll also be grouchy and snapping at other students, which will cause spats, and at teachers, which will cause them to get in trouble. Don't worry, though. Miss Obama will make it all better by jumping-jacking all the way from D.C. and forcing them to jump rope on tv with her.

You turn your children over to the government for several hours everyday and you're complaining about what they serve for lunch?

Ok, I don't mind making a lunch but where can they keep it cool until time to eat it? Should they not provide microwaves to the kids that might want an alternative? The prisoners get microwaves while incarcerated. When I was a young child in Texas we had to bring our lunch to the school I went to but the lunches were not kept cool. It is a wonder we did not all get food posion.

So what is your suggestion? Home schooling is out of the question as I have to work. I cannot see kids sitting around getting brain dead from TV all day. And I cannot afford private school. Give me an idea.

You said, "Once again the government wants to step in and be the parent. I think they need to back off and leave raising our kids to us."

If you have kids that you can't educate and you send them to government schools for that purpose, you shouldn't be surprised when the government wants to act like their parent.

I think if you don't have a child in school or grandchild, you probably don't realize just how bad the situation is. Kids have always griped about school lunches, but from what I KNOW, they now have a real gripe. It is awful the regulations that have been placed on the lunch program.

Back up what you're saying with some facts. List the school menu for a week and explain what's wrong with it.

My child showed me a pic that one of his classmates took of the school lunch...it looked terrible . A piece of burned ham a dried up roll & crushed pineapples. Where are the vegetables?

My child was saying that one Kindegartener was crying because they will not give them syrup with the pancakes, it is off limits now. Mine eats breakfast at home but this is sad. I would not eat pancakes with out syrup.

Mine plays sports and I worry that they don't get enough to hold them over from school through practice. I would love to have an idea of a lunch to pack that would not be dangerous if eaten at room temp.

I heard the same about the pancakes....They put powder sugar on them instead. I still prefer syrup :)

As I understand the new rules, the school has the power to inspect all packed lunches. If whoever looks at the contents feels it does not meet the requirements (whatever they are), then the home meal can be tossed in the garbage.

Voter, we elect a School Board to deal with matters such as this. Maybe we need to unelect a few.
