Nugent found not guilty in Taser death trial in Winnfield

October 29, 2010

A jury today found former Winnfield Police Officer Scott Nugent not guilty of manslaughter in the death of a suspect who Nugent had Tasered repeatedly.

Closing arguments were heard this morning in the trial taking place in Winnfield.

Nugent was accused of using a Taser to cause the death of Barron “Scooter” Pikes on Jan. 17, 2008.

The jury had three options: not guilty; guilty of manslaughter; or guilty of negligent homicide. Jurors chose not guilty.

At least one juror voted guilty, based on a poll of jurors.

If convicted, Nugent could have faced up to 40 years in prison.

After the acquittal, the judge let Nugent and his family leave the courtroom 10 minutes before anyone else could leave, apparently for safety reasons. The case has caused some racial tensions in Winnfield.

Nugent, 24, is white. Pikes was black.

God has spoken through the jury. Now...God please see the safety of Scott and his family. Also, be with the other family. Two wrongs won't make a right and nothing will change what has already happened.

It is not a matter of race but simply a trial that held else where...

I said whoever had the best attorney would win and they did. Doesn't matter if he killed him or not, the DA did not prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the tazer killed him so there could only be one verdict.

My suggestion to everyone that does not like the verdict, take your drugs and move away from Winnfield!

The DA is affraid of what would have happened if he was found guilty, because we know that noone wants to go down by themselves. Now you use that peice of brain and look into that.DUH

AMEN I am sick and tired of people trying to lessen the grievance of breaking the law by justifying the severity of the crime. The one that rings the most loudly in my memory is the one I heard a few years ago..."He was only stealing a car, he didn't deserve to get shot for just stealing a car" The verdict was the right one.

I would like to say to the Pikes Family that I am sorry for your loss. I am white. I hope that the Pikes family and other blacks in this town do not hold this against the "real" white people of this community. Just remember that all white people are NOT like that. Remember your enemy and it is not WHITE PEOPLE in general. I hate the stereotyping of white, black, Mexican, etc. It is 2010 and we need to get pass this issue. My sympathies to you and I wish your outcome had been different. Wrong is wrong, no matter the color of your skin. I do not like the link posted above. I found it racist to ALL whites and this is coming from a white whose best friend is black.
