Voters in Kenner. La. defeated all 6 tax proposals yesterday.
When the city council looks after the interest of the people(3 council members opposed the taxes) and a few citizens join in the opposition great thing can happen. The mayor said he had cut fat... but the citizens said he had not cut enough. Now he says he will start cutting more! Every political entity can cut and how quickly they find ways to cut when the people quit funding waste!
Winn voters need to wake up and quit passing every property tax that is presented. So many who don't own property don't consider that in the long run property tax (that non-property owners don't pay) will hurt them too. Most who don't own property are quick to vote a tax on property owners. Moe and more people are realizing we have been taxed too much and it's time we voters do something about it.

Voters in two parishes also defeated property taxes: Caldwell parish voters defeated two taxes( one was for maintenance of courthouse) and Webster voters defeated a tax to fund "industrial park" improvements. Good for those voters.

When property taxes are defeated( as in these cases) that is a real victory for the taxpayers.

I think it is important for all taxpayers, but we who live in Winn can only lend our influence here. A look at this website shows how local concerned citizens can win the victory over out-of-control government.
http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2011/0...
this is good information for us. the Kenner group put out lots of signs saying:
VOTE NO
Taxed Enough Already
NO NEW TAXES
But most importantly, the citizens working against the tax proposals had done their homework and were informed. On their hand-outs they listed specific information about salaries of local politicians and the spending by them.
I feel if the citizens of Winnfield had had the opportunity to vote on utility rate increases, it would have failed for it was pointed out many times how sewer/water funds were being used to buy new trucks and that the salaries of the council and mayor are too high ($10,800 for each of the 5 council persons)for the work they need to do in this small, poor, rural town with high unemployment, and considering the waste in times past of our monies. We need to keep working on getting our electrical bills reduced, and salaries reduced since the council rammed down our throats the sewer/water increase against the wish of the majority. And now that department should be standing on its own and the electric fees not having to support that department any longer.
It was such a waste for the mayor and council to hire an engineer to be a repeater of the words the mayor told him to say about finances. That was ridiculous!!

Yes it is!!
The Kenner City Council is now discovering all sorts of ways to economize, now that the voters have spoken. Why couldn’t they have done this PRIOR to the election, instead of first going to the voters for MORE money?
The above came from Lincoln Parish news Online. Good article at that site about the tax defeat in Kenner. We need to do that the next time politicians try to tax us more. Believe our elected ones could find places to cut, too, and operate without more and more taxes.

Joe, as has been pointed out many times , not everyone who is a taxpayer of Winnfield is available to go to council meetings. In our form of government the citizens elect persons to represent us. They are being well paid in Winnfield to attend those meetings.
They have read these posts and have seen the polls posted here and they know the feelings of the majority of the people. We want wastes cut out, and some belt-tightening in city government before increasing fees (taxes) on the people. We want to see council and mayor salaries decreased. It is ridiculous to pay council members for this small, poor, rural town $10,800/yr for a few hours work per month. We want to see more inventory control over supplies and equipment, we want that white elephant, called industrial park sold. It has been a real money loser and is still costing us . We would like to see the mayor we elected to study and report on the finances of the city rather than hire a CIVIL ENGINEER to parrot his remarks on finances. Is not the mayor capable? I'm sure there are many more areas where there can be cost-cutting measures. We've had to do it in our homes, yet government is taking more and more from us as groceries, medicines, insurance goes up and there is no cost of living increases in retirement funds and high gasoline prices is costing more and more to get to job sites.

Some of us have to work , and work where it can be found, which for many is out of town, out of the parish and out of the state. NO way can all who vote here be present for council meetings. Just because voters don't "show up" it WILL NOT BE US TO BLAME . We will have no one to blame for rate increases but each council member who votes for the increase.
Some, like yourself, only think of your situation and not the situation many others are in.

The city council of Kenner proposed cutting their own travel budget for a savings of #$17,500 and are wasting no time in making other cost-cutting proposals, while the mayor wants them to slow down and let him get a "task force" together to "study" the problem.

Oh, if only our council and mayor would cut their high salaries and make some cost cutting moves to save us some money. Seems there are lots of places to save in Winnfield but the council and mayor will not take action along that line, but only think of raising our fees.

They will not. They are all COWARDS. They are not real men and women concerned with Winnfield or Winn Parish. Have any of you seen or heard of a plan to downsize or consolidate?

The city of Winnfield elected officials could find ways to economize if we voted the sales tax down tomorrow (Sat. Dec 8, 2012)
The mayor & council have already increased our sewer and water rates, not they aren't satisfied until they get more from us. Vote no more tax! If the mayor was a good steward of our tax money, he would have not had an expensive SPECIAL ELECTION BUT WOULD HAVE HAD THE PROPOSAL ON A BALLOT WHEN WE HAD OTHER THINGS TO VOTE ON.

There was jubilation in Winn Parish in 2009 among tax payers when a parish wide tax was defeated. May the citizens of the city defeat the tax today. We are taxed too much.

The city council and the mayor are ridiculously overpaid. The city council is in session for about an hour a month and they get paid about a thousand bucks a month. On top of that they are given health care benefits. These are things they voted in for themselves. As Mayor Thornton pointed out towards the end of his tenure as mayor, that position is a part time position and most of Winnfield's Mayors have had another job. The mayor makes over $60,000 a year for being a part time employee. That's just a little food for thought. Other city salary figures. Full time police officers' and fire fighters' starting pay is $16,320 a year. That is $8.50 an hour. Most years they get a per annum increase of twenty five cents per hour. The council and the mayor wonder why the city is a crime ridden dump, and why the police department can't keep personnel. It's probably because they vote themselves new pay raises almost annually and give none to anyone else.
