Louisiana principals on Friday voted to split the football playoffs into select and non-select schools starting next year.

The select schools playoff will be split into two “classes” called Division I (for private/select admission schools in classes 3A-5A) and Division II (private schools in classes 1-2A). The non-select playoffs will remain as it now, with Classes 5A-1A.

The decision came at the annual LHSAA convention in Baton Rouge. There were two different proposals calling for separate playoff divisions for public and private (or select and non-select) schools.

The split has been an ongoing debate for more than a decade. Proposals for splitting the publics and privates were voted down twice, most recently in 2004. Last year, a proposal calling for the split was tabled until this year.

At the most recent Superdome Prep Classic, seven of the 10 participants — and four of the five champions — were private schools. Either John Curtis or Evangel won the 2A championship in each of the six years they have both been in the division, and neither lost a playoff game during that span to anyone but the other.

Why just football and not other sports?

Winnfield, your're as yellow as a sunflower. Maybe now, you can win a state championship since in 2011 you were the "public school" champions. Maybe you should have a banner made for that season hahahaha. Just remember, if you win one now, it doesn't really count since you're not playing the best teams. Good luck on your 2013 "Public School" run.

I'm curious also as to why this rule only applies to football. Does anyone know?

Because the football teams in a few select schools outplay opposing football teams in their classes. the ruling leaves room to be applied to other sports should the need arise. that is a possibility in the near future.

I'm not jealous. I've coached my team to a state title and it was against everybody. Yall are just tired of choking in the big game. I mean heck, you lost to a public school this year after you beat them easily. Also, yall dress as many kids as they do in 5A but yet you're still complaining. Like I said, yall are as yellow as Big Bird.

“I certainly don’t want to hurt the LHSAA or our schools,” said Winnfield Principal Jane Griffin, who spearheaded the legislation.“This doesn’t take championships away from select schools. It just makes my kids and other kids at public schools know they’ve got a chance. Every kid should believe they can be a champion. That can’t happen the way things are. Things are not fair and equitable. We’ll see what happens. If it doesn’t work, we can go back, and I’ll be leading the charge. But I think it will.”

Griffin’s proposal defines select schools as private schools, charter schools, full magnet schools, laboratory schools and dual-curriculum schools that draw at least 25 percent of their magnet component enrollment from outside a traditional attendance zone.

What team was that? Unless your team beat John Curtis or Evangel you weren't the best in the state(I assume you meant football).
