I grew up in Winnfield for half of my life, and move away from Winnfield at the age of eighteen. I can tell you that it's something wrong in Winnfield when it comes to the number of people who has cancer and who as died from cancer. It's all different ages and races men, women and children. For a long time people has said there is something in the ground, water and air that is cause from the cancer. Let me give you something to think about in the past eight years, I have lost eight family members from cancer in Winnfield, and eleven friends from cancer. And I know about seventeen more people who live in Winnfield with cancer. Now you can tell me if you do not think something is wrong with that town. Winnfield should be closed down and all of the people who live there should be relocated and the roads that go into the town should be close. Winnfield is not a safe place to live for no one. Some need to bring this issues to the light. These people who live in Winnfield needs help bad. Stop pushing these health issues under the rug there should be someone from the gov to step in and close this town before it's to late. May be it's alteady to late. We must pray for the people who is living in this town.

I share the concerns of all of you. I lost my father, grandfather, brother, aun t and great aunt to cancer, all in Jackson Parish(right next to Winn).
I grew up in Ouachita and just now came back after a 43 yr absence. I immediately noticed the very high incidence of cancer around here and my conclusion even before reading about the salt mine was:"DON'T DRINK THE WATER"!

The company doing this testing was Laurence Livermore National Laboratory www.doeal.gov/.../LLNL_ConciseHistory_1952-20...
The print is minute and must be enlarged to 400% so that it can be read. My dates are incorrect they should start the research in 1952 and go through the sealing of Carey Salt Mine in the early 1970's. The proper name for this program is Plowshare Program, Cowboy Event 1957.
Please help research this information...Is this why Carey Salt was sealed.
Lawrence Livermore along with other labs such as one near Chicago and the University of Texas get Gov't research contracts
for the military. The amt. of money paid to the Carey Co. for the use of their facility more than made up for the loss of their mine.
One has to have a great deal of experience with the military and gov't to "read between the lines" of what happened at the salt mine. I have both. The "Real Reason" for the testing which I'm sure was not stated to Livermore was to see how hard it would be for the communists to detect underground nuclear testing and how hard it would be to detect theirs. You have to go back to the 1950's mentality and state of affairs to understand this.

I also live near there and want to tell you that there is such
a thing as "half truths" that is that they are not a lie but the whole story is not told. The real story is that CE could stand for
chemical explosives but actually it meant "Conventional explosives.
The conventionals were tested of course and in far larger quantiies
than publically proclaimed need I tell you what else was tested and what was dumped into the pit after the mine was closed? Can you figure it out?.........DON'T DRINK THE WATER!........

Would you be so kind to explain your comment about the Carey Salt Mine. I find it totally strange that you made that comment. I say that since my mother worked in the salt mine till it closed. It closed from them hitting an underground river that flooded the mine and all the equipment.
My father also worked at the Carey Salt Mine until it closed. He was the last man there for Carey until they officially closed the whole operation. He always said he thought the Atomic testing weakened the walls which caused the river to break through. They did not "hit" an underground river, there was a leak by the elevator shaft that kept getting worse and a crew of three men stayed after working hours to get it fixed. They were trying to chip away the area enough to fill it with concrete when the river broke through. The river had such force it hit the wall on the other side of that 50 foot room and never touched the floor. Those men were lucky to get out alive and we can only thank God this was done after the end of the days shift are all of the workers might not have made it. Also, that was the second time they had a water leak since the testing. The first time was a couple of years prior, inside the elevator shaft, but they brought in concrete trucks and got it plugged up. The Carey Salt Mine was established in 1931 and the atomic blasting,“Project Cowboy”, started in 1959 and ran through 1960. The mine ran for 28 years without any leaking problems from that underground river. Yet six years after all of the AEC’s atomic testing the river caused wall leakage twice and Carey closed its doors circa March 1966. I have to agree with my father and others, Project Cowboy was the culprit. There was a very good article about the mine published in the Alexandria Town Talk on May 20, 1984, page 4-A.
That underground river was the water table and it is shared as an aquifer over a large part of northern Louisiana. I don't know if it's been mapped but anyone tapping into it would share it's polluted/contaminated water. Unfortunantly we can't or should'nt drink the water around here anymore or eat any fish from the local waters. We can only use the water for washing, cleaning, gardening and sanitation. We should only drink bottled water.

<quoted text> Can you tell me more about sardis and five forks and more on where this is located, id like to go see this, please let me know something asap!
Well this isn't ASAP but the church at Quitman used to be called Sardis and the road (Brooks Chapel) does turn into a gravel road and the "sludge" you saw was probably sewage which landowners get paid to allow dumping and supposedly it turns into "topsoil" over time.

Wow...Interesting stuff.. Considering my Daddy worked at both Winn Rock as well as the Creosote plant in Winnfield for almost the entire decade of the 80s its amazing he hasnt had cancer and is quite healthy. However my younger sister died of cancer at the age of 36. I had never heard of Project Cowboy before. I have now researched this topic a bit and found some info about it but there was a typo . It is listed under "Project CoyBoy"

You are right about not being able to find anything. I have spent the better part of 2 hours searching....but there was such a project and there should be information on it somewhere. Please continue to look and I will also search. Someone in the local government or state government should be able to tell us something about this. I am going to contact my congressman and see if he might be able to get me some links. Thank you for your interest in our community.
Project Cowboy...but typo has it as "Project Coyboy"

Must I say after leaving Winnfield in the early 1970 my dad always said son we are moving away because this town is not a safe place to live in any more. My dad was one of the many workers who worked in the salt mine. He had always said there were things happen in the mine by outside companies that people in the town was not aware of. You could tell in the late part of 1969 things had began to change in the town from the drinking water to the smell and the fish that were dying in some the local creeks. If you would like to find something out about the salt mine take a trip out to the spill way make a long walk to the far south east side and take a look at the ground and test the water you will be surprised in what you will find we use to play around there as kids. My dad always said if you all keep playing around that place you all are going to get sick . He was right. Both of my friends are dead from cancer. I have beat cancer twice. Both times in the 1980. Get away from that town. Winnfield is not a safe place for anyone. Ljr is right. Winnfield should be name cancer alley and closed down. You can believe what you like but I know the truth from my dad who work in the mines.
