Employees of Poplar Grove Associates, Inc. in Amherst Virginia are loosing everything they have. Their Houses, their families, and anything else they owe on. It’s not because they are closed down, laid off, or not showing up for work; They show up, do their jobs, and when pay day comes around, they are told “Sorry, we have no money”! This is one of the top rated Golf Communities in Virginia! The employees of the golf course and the housing development are expected to work for FREE! Most employees are two to three checks behind on getting paid, and this is on a two week pay schedule. If they just walk out, they will be fired, and they cannot file for unemployment or afford to have this on their resume for their next jobs. This facility hosts large golf tournaments throughout the year; they just made quite a bit of cash less than two weeks ago and promised their employees that they would get paid after the tournament. Today, five days after their scheduled pay day, they are told again that they were not being paid. The Labor department has been notified. Lawyers have been contacted. But in the meantime, bill collectors are contacting the employees about unpaid bills. I am sure that Tim Bell, part owner of the corporation is not loosing everything HE owns. What is the world coming to when honest, hardworking people have to loose all they have because the system will not step in and protect them from this type of abuse. The owners of this facility will give no explanations to their employees except “Bear with us, those who cooperate with us during this tuff time will receive a bonus when things are straightened out”, meaning the one or two who have contacted the Virginia Department of Labor and Lawyers will NOT get a bonus.
I hope the rest of the hard working people of Virginia will be as outraged as I am, and Colleges such as Liberty University that use this facility regularly will step in and let Poplar Grove Associates, Inc that they do not appreciate this sort of business practice.
