It will be interesting to hear more about this. Was the off duty police officer at fault - perhaps drinking/driving or was the kid at fault - perhaps a night out with his buddies partying.

Maybe drinking, driving and texting? I drive down this street every day in the same direction. If you are following the speed limit there is no way he could have not seen this kid!

Perhaps, it's a tough call..I live right near this intersection and I see kids flying down the street all the time on bikes - black bikes, black pants, black hoodies w/ the hoods up - no reflectors on the bikes. At midnight that would be tough to see. I'm definitely not fully blaming the kid no way - if you are driving a car, you need to be aware of things like this. I was talking to someone though that lives right at the intersection and he said from what he could see it definitely was not the cars fault this time, the kid came out of no where.

Regardless, sad, sad situation

WLTownie, I think someone gave you incorrect information. I live in the area and to my knowledge no one saw the accident happen except for one couple who happened to be driving in the opposite direction. They said the driver was speeding and the kid didn't come out of nowhere. According to the police, the kid was already in the road when he was hit which tells me, he didn't just jump in the road. The road is very well lit and if he wasn't speeding he wouldn't have knocked the kid three houses up where he landed. He hit this kid so hard he knocked him right out of his shoes and socks! Only time will tell, eventually the whole report will come out and we will all know what really happened.

This case just got very interesting with the release of a video tape of the off-duty officer drinking at a bar prior to hitting the kid. Speeding is definitely the main cause of the accident because his body was completely torn up due to the impact and from being dragged for some distance. It was a hit an run by an officer. Seems like the officer's father, a sargeant within the police department, was involved...very disappointing to have to witness dishonesty in our justice system.
