Respectfully, if you are talented and educated, I recommend taking your attributes elsewhere. Fort Collins and most of northern Colorado lags and is falling further and further behind in competititive wages - perhaps as a result of the steep fall off from the building boom of the last 20 years that once moved and drove exponential growth in the area. It was all fake growth and they overbuilt the area.

What vitality remains in Fort Collins is now sales driven - where those who are successful, prey off the misfortunes of those who are less enlightened.

Come if you'd like but beware, getting started here is as ruthless and scathing as the scenery if beautiful and getting established takes years. And unless you have family here, you'll be totally alone amidst a self-centered and narcissistic populous greatly depraved of any social graces and cordiality endemic of residents like Richard Heene, the Balloon Boy dad.

Best of luck to you in what you decide.

I've lived in the Fort for over 10 years. Prior, I've lived West Coast, East Coast, and Deep South. Here's the skinny:

Fort Collins, in general, is a nice place. Low crime, affordable housing, and lots of activities as you'd expect in a college town.
Negatives are low employment offerings and opportunities. Not much capital and Fort Collins is basically a service town, the economy mainly centered around the college. It's not a big city so you'll miss out on that scene, if that's what you like.
My recommendation: if you want a small-city Rocky Mt. lifestyle and can handle simple living - Fort is a good place to be.
If you're looking for a larger growing career and prefer more hustle of a large city, then you'll want to look elsewhere.
Good luck!

If you like being treated rudely by ignorant provincials, by all means, move to Fort Collins. I was born in Fort Collins and when I had the opportunity to attend CSU 6 years ago, I jumped at the chance to finally live in my birthplace. If I had a time machine, I'd have said "To hell with Colorado, let's move back to Texas where people aren't socially retarded."

Seriously, most of the folks around here are self absorbed a-holes. Lying, cheating or just doing a real half-ass job are the norm among these folks who apparently have never been taught simple common courtesies like saying "thank you", "you're welcome", "please", etc., etc. I'm not joking. If I acted like these people when I was a kid, my parents would have beaten me to death.

If you don't already have a job lined up, for the love of God, DON'T come here or you will never be able to escape. Are the mountains pretty? Sure. But the combination of year-round crappy weather, high prices, unbelievably rude and stupid people and no jobs will have you hating the mountains too.

Don't believe me? I'm a Phi Beta Kappa with 9.5 years of higher education and I can't find work ANYWHERE. Wherever you are now, you are better off than you would be in this sh*thole. It's like being in the freaking Twilight Zone.

' Best bet would be to move to LA (Lake Arthur) New Mexico. Lovely place-- 10 people, lot of rattle snakes, dust storms. 0% humidity, low taxes, lots of welfare money, 1,000 miles from nowhere, no jobs, no nothin'. Water is terrible (if you can find any). Used to be a well driller there but he had to move on--no H2O! Lots of wind and dust and 114 degrees year round. Other than that--best place on earth. Sad--but true!! ALMOST AS GOOD AS CALIF.

---TO CROM--- I was a "I FETA THIGH" and graduated from the 8th grade. TheN 10 yrs latER, I got my GED (whatever that means??). theN I got a schollership to LCCC (Laramie CO. COWBOY COLLEDGE) IN cHEYENNE, wy. I now own my own car (a used 1985 ford with all the hubcaps). Which just goes to show you, if you work reel hard like me, then any one can do it. I'm now President of one of the Big banks hear (a branch out of Montaina). They treat me awfully good to. I almost make $1,000/month now. Next year if all goes well I might move out of mamma's basemunt and get my own place. or maybe get me an executive job in Fort Fun (Colins). After that, who knows, I might go back to Colleget and git an adavanced degree.(even if I have to buy one) they do that kind of stuff around here.I might even go to Taxas (on u're sugestion). I was there oncet--liked purty well to, I might add! Do'nt no if I have the time to go to the 9 1/2yrs of higher education, but no worries, I prutty much no it all as it is!! I unerstand that you can buy one of them PHD's (whatever that is) for around $2,500 ( I heard one of are expolice higherups got one here awhile back, a few yrs ago), and he got promoted--I understood the city of Cheyenne even paid for it. However I realy like Furt Collins a lot, maybe they'll buy me one here. A phd in banking has a nice ring to it, since I'm alreedy in that field. They say, if you play your cards right that you can make lots of $$ in banking, especialy if ewe can get to Wall st.(whereever that is)?? Is there a wall street in Ft coLLins??. Well cofee brake is over-- gots to hit it!--have a goodt one.

See what I mean? I guess that people in Cheyenne are bonehards as well. Your best bet is to avoid the intermountain west entirely. No jobs. No objectivity. No manners. Just a bunch of passive-aggressive douchebags who can't discuss an issue in a straightforward manner. I've never encountered a colder or more soul-less place.

Don't move here if you are looking for nice people. I moved back here a few years ago from Philadelphia and and have found people here in Fort Collins are just as rude, self-absorbed and inconsiderate of their neighbors as people in the north east.

Serious Lee, maybe you should change your name to "Exact Lee". Only difference is that people in the northeast actually have a couple of reasons for being snotty yuppies, like top-notch schools, museums, historical attractions, seasons actually last about 3 months apiece (as opposed to one month of spring in June, 2 months of summer in July and August, 1 month of autumn in September and 8 months of winter).

Poooor 'ol Crom,
Me thinks he was breast fed until about 10 yrs old! 9 1/2 yrs of college huh?? Well, I won't tell any one----maybe you can get some of your money back if you try!! You probly got a lot of "book learnin'" in those 9 yrs., but as they say, "its what you learn, after you know it all that counts"!! I think you let your school'n get in the way of your education; the military is lookin' for good school boys like you)!!! On the Forum you come across as a bitter 'lil crybaby, paranoid, manic depressive, spoiled brat.--'Can't have your way all the time, bubba. You might try grow'n up a little bit, first chance you git. In the mean time--the road still goes "TO and FROM" FT COLLINS (I just checked)-- So 'hit the road Jack' and have a safe journey. We'll miss ya!! Keep in touch, and let us know how you're a doin'.
--IF you do 'join up',-- that'll "shore 'nough" git you a free ticket out of Ft. Collins. I have a feeling you'd probly enjoy Iraq or Afganistan! WE can't wait to see what kind of fit you're a gonna throw now. HA HA HA HA--Have a good one!

Already did my time in the Air Force in the '80s. Honorable military service doesn't count for much around here either (except a license plate). You try to sound as if you served, but I doubt you did. Nobody who's ever served (except maybe a sh*tbird or two) would ever encourage military service as a mere escape from financial problems. It's more than a meal ticket.

See here's the thing. For 6 years here I've busted my ass in school and at the only jobs I can find (self-employment) because nobody will hire me. I did excellently well in school and my self-employment ideas are sound. I have submitted my resume in numerous places and I have been told that it is "threatening" because I have good grades and exemplary military service. Everywhere else I've lived, the good grades and service have been considered an ASSET and I get hired quickly (and do a great job). Here? Twilight Zone. Rod Serling sez: Experience, brains and commitment don't count for anything when the manager's half-wit cousin needs a job.

Red, mi muchacho, what can I say? Tang shin ee Skivvy Nine anh ee suh myun, tang shin ee ddong anh in deh!(I could tell you, but then I'd have to...)

I have lived in many places around the world, mostly during my career in the Army, which lasted for over 27 years. Fort Collins is a very nice place, it has its up and downs just like many other places in the USA.

No matter where one goes, there is always rude people, low wage jobs and crime.

With the present economy, living and working in many places is becoming a major issue.

I will stay in Fort Collins!

Tone down your resume, and take off your degree. I'm retired from the Army, and have a B.S.A.S. that isn't even listed because nobody wanted to hire me when they'd see that. I left the retired part on there, but toned it down a lot.

Jobs and money can only buy so much happiness. If you are person who likes a variety of people and thinking, great lifestyle, go to Fort Collins. If you stuck with THE being near family/big job and afraid to leave that, stay where you are. I wish I had moved to FC when I had the chance. Biggest regret of my life.

Fort Collins is great. If you shipped out all the locals and replaced them with decent non-douchebags. So I'd say skip it. Most people are these days. There won't be much left besides some tourism and a few technology jobs soon. Which is pretty much what they deserve.

I moved to Fort Collins from Tennessee 4 years ago,and WoW can you say culture shock! Its nice yes with Old Town if you like bars, but honestly Colorado is ugly.Excpet for the mountains that is.Its dry, dead, and yes Fort Collinians do have a certain douchebag attitude.Jobs are not that easy to come by,and housing is WAY overpriced.I cant wait to move back down south where people understand the meaning of "southern hospitality".
