Woman Cited For Feeding Too Many Homeless

(KVVU)-- A good deed has landed a valley woman in court.
Gail Sacco was cited and banned from downtown's Circle Park for six months for feeding too many homeless people. According to park rules, it's against the law for a group of 25 people or more to gather without a permit. Gail Sacco claims police abuse as she was unfairly cited for trying to help the homeless.

Las Vegas city attorney Brad Jerbic tells FOX5 that the city isn't against homelessness. He says the park is too small for large groups and that they have received complaints from businesses about the daily gatherings.

Allen Litchtenstein, local attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, argues the ordinance is flawed. Under the city's rules, you can't even get a permit for that particular park. According to the city's web site, permits are only available in 14 of the city's 63 parks.

"People have a right to food. It's not a privilege. It's a right and people have the right to share food," said Gail Sacco.

Sacco makes her first court appearance in two weeks. She plans to fight the citation, which carries a possible penalty of either six months in jail or $1,000 fine.
The ACLU says they will represent her if this goes into litigation.
So what wrong with Nevada? Another case of abuse by law enforcement, the legal system and the states over abundance of laws designed to promote domestic terrorism against the American people.

sure, let's put people like Sacco in jail. There is plenty of cells available in our jails for good harded people. This is just getting out of hands. City Officials and lawyers just have nothing better to do.

People, let's start using that gray thing inside our skulls and use some common sense. Put criminals in front of judges and into jail and find some smarter solutions for people who actually do want to help.

This and many more abuses are present and seen DAILY in Henderson and Las Vegas. It wasn't until we mover to Henderson that they destroyed my good driving record because some overzellous motorcycle cop had nothing better to do than harrass the motorist. The really bad part is the municipal kangaroo court judge Ken Proctor believed the lieing cop. To date no one is lifting a finger to stop all these abuses of the American public in this area. Forget feeding or housing the poor, due to some junk law established by a corrupt lawyer, everyone is screwed.

More police abuse?. Could the police have handled it differently or is murder the only way to solve this latest case in Nevada?

LAS VEGAS (AP)-- Las Vegas police say they shot and killed a man last night who supposedly threatened officers with kitchen knives.

Police say the shooting happened when officers responded to a domestic violence call, a little after midnight at the residents home.

An officer fired twice, killing and taking the life of the 43-year-old man after police claimed he lunged toward an officer with a kitchen knife in each hand.

The woman who called police told investigators her boyfriend was bi-polar and had suicidal tendencies. Someone that needed special care and handling.

The officer who killed the resident is a six-year veteran of the department. He's on paid administrative leave -- and his name won't be released until Wednesday.

Out of control police who doesn’t know how to help the mental ?
Shoot first, then shoot again, and then when everyone is dead, try to ask a question or offer some sort of medical assistance to those who need it. Not in Las Vegas. Not in Henderson. You decide.

The US Senate Judiciary Committee adopted an amendment by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., that would protect church and charitable groups, as well as individuals, from criminal prosecution for providing food, shelter, medical care and counseling to undocumented immigrants.
Maybe this will stick it in the eye of the Nevada legal system and allow people to feed the hungry.

Unbelievable... The amount of Monday Morning quarterbacking that goes on... Can you say that you've ever been confronted with a knife wielding psychopath? Do you know the safe distance to be away from a knife wielding psychopath? Do you have training to know ANYTHING about dealing with knife wielding psychopath? I know, how do "I" know he was a psychopath??? "I DON'T" That's my point, neither do you. The statistics show that Domestic Violence calls for police are the MOST Dangerous calls to respond to. And, just because the suspect isn't sporting a GUN instead of a knife, the KNIFE can be JUST AS DEADLY!!! Get off of your recliner and stop second guessing what YOU have No Knowledge of.

A woman who killed four people when she crashed her S-U-V into a bus stop in March last year has reached a plea deal to misdemeanor charges. In exchange, the city agreed Schmidt would be given a suspended sentence and be put under house arrest for eight months. During that time she will not be allowed to drive. In the following year, she will be forbidden from driving after taking medication or after drinking any amount of alcohol.
The city says after the crash, Schmidt was found with enough of the anti-depressant Xanax in her system to impair her driving. Schmidt initially told police that she fell asleep behind the wheel.
The city says it agreed to drop charges of speeding, failure to maintain a travel lane, giving false information to police and contempt of court.

We have our eyes on Vegas right now. Gail is one of many people, each year who are financialy impaired by the park exclusionary ordinance throughout the country. Basically I assume they will argue basically the same arguments that we (Seattle) argued in 2002 to leagalize tent city 3. "the preservation of human life outweighs the preservation of the law." The permit process defeats the purpose of the park. Enjoyment. Then you have other issues regarding the Peaceful Assembly in a public park. We regard that argument as the Rainbow Rule. Find out what we have planned at our new but incomplete website at

The city attorney says las vegas isn't against homelessness. What a crock that is. One time several years ago my brother and i were backpacking around the country. We had just paid a weeks rent at a Motel on Las Vegas Blvd, down near North town, but still in the city of Vegas.

I went to the local 7-11 and bought a six pack of beer and some munchies to take back to the room, where brother was waiting. Upon exiting the store a couple of guys asked me for spare change, and i was telling them i could maybe spare a dollar, as our funds were really low at that time.

Here comes mr yellow shirted bicycle cop with an attitude from hell. Arrests all of us for tresspassing, and pedisterian interference, whatever the heck that is , as we were only ones there.

To make a long story short, i was thrown in jail because i didn't have a thousand dollars to post bail, and waited in jail 3 weeks to see a judge, who said if i pleaded guilty he would release me. Otherwise i could return to jail for about 6 months waiting for a trial. guess which option i took?

So, anytime they say that vegas doesn't abuse poor or homeless it is a downright dirty lie.

Nevada keeps it's parks for show to tourism.
Even their state parks are a rip-off. No discounts for seniors for day use once or twice or three times a year? Yeah, that's right, keep the hhomeless, and old people out of the park and the government won't have as much of a law enforcement problem! Hah!

Cities are judged by the way they can effectively manage people. A city as rich as Las Vegas can start model programs for people who are willing to meet them halfway. Give a little, get a little. Grassroots and concrete can co exist. Sometimes the city life can dehumanise people. That's sad. Get a Grip America !

Its too bad the judges in Clark County Nevada are backing bad laws and bad cops. The State has turned into a "police state" both opressive and abusive.

Someone needs to teach the US Constitution to every public servant in this state, especially the cops.

How can you not feed the hungry?
Every US American citizen should be screaming abuse and taking every action possible to stop this mean treatment by lawyers and judges in Las Vegas/Henderson, of those willing to feed the poor especially out of their own pocket.

Any one who is cited for feeding the poor deserves our applause. Nevada has violated Gail Sacco First Amendment rights . Where,“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The Unites States Congress should be notified and take every action against the police, the prosecuting attorney and State of Nevada for allowing such actions to occur against a good hearted citizen. This lady was not a criminal in any way shape or form yet she was treated as if she was. This is another reason why no one can trust a cop or the legal system in the State of Nevada.

Well, not so far away in lovely Inglewood, CA, my neighbor was murdered in cold blood by a cop. He had been harrassed by them for months, so he said. I'd call this the final word in harrassment. Now, he is dead. To me, it is a crime. I believe that he was a good man. A tragedy for his family, and for his little daughter, who has no one to take her fishing again, or to the zoo, or so many things they might have done together. His poor grandfather.. This may kill him. God bless their family. RIP, "Junior".

I think it's lovely that this woman wants to feed hungry people. What is not lovely is the fact that she is ruining a park that was recently remodeled at great expenditure for neighborhood families, none of which will go there now, and who have these same homeless people- most drunk and/or high, roaming the streets near their houses. If she wants to feed the homeless, she can go pool her resources with the Salvation army, or better yet, invite them over to her house. I'll bet she has air conditioning where they can really cool off. No, this angel of mercy wants to make the decision for others to have the bums- and yes, they ARE bums, hanging out at around their houses. How dare she.

She's very inspirational. I have often eaten with Food Not Bombs in other cities (and I'm not a "bum" or a homeless person). They're good people; some of the best in the world. Food Not Bombs is not just about "feeding" the homeless; it's about eating with the outcasts of society, as equals, to make some effort to bring the rejected back into the fold of humanity. It's also about questioning why it is that we can spend billions to fight a war in Iraq, while people sleep on the streets in America. That's why it's done in public, "ruining" fancy parks. If there were fewer homeless, and better mental health services, it would be impossible to "ruin" the park, for lack of "untouchables" to participate in the picnic. Perhaps the feeding can be moved to City Hall.
