Jeff Parenti's childhood was straight out of Mayberry. Growing up near Concord town center, he spent summers trading baseball cards at the five-and-ten, eating ice-cream cones at the soda shop, playing baseball in a nearby park.

Just what Billerica center needs more traffic, thats not Mayberry. Can you imagine the mess during construction.

It's definitely not a cool town to live in. I grew up there and couldn't wait to get out. Now I have money to spend and I wouldn't go into Billerica to do so. There is nothing to do and nowhere to shop or mingle. You have to go into downtown Lowell or Boston to find something decent to do on a Saturday night. There isn't even anywhere to bike, walk, jog or push a stroller, unless you try a main drag with no sidewalks or resort to staying in your cul-de-sac.
Precisely. Same reason why I moved to Lowell out of college instead of back to my also characterless and additionally taxbase-unhealthy hometown of Tyngsboro(ugh).

And for those saying that the town meeting is the truest form of democracy - this is a republic. Mob rule is not always a desirable thing. A lot of New England towns are run by amateurs in what appears to be a popularity contest, and I think that's a bad thing.

"The Moonbats took a hit last night. This was a BIG slap to the moonbats on the Planning Board (Casey and Mahoney) and the Anti-Home Depot crew. They got their heads handed to them. They think their vision is the best for the town and Town Meeting saw right through their gross power play attempt."

According to the story, the article received a majority vote but not a 2/3 as needed. That's hardly a big slap. Billerica is changing and the folks attacking progress are on their way out.

I've seen the term before but don't understand what it means... what's a moonbat?
Moonbat is a term used in United States politics as a political epithet referring to liberals or leftists. Wingnut is often used as the analogous epithet aimed at the political right.

An extreme leftist, throwing aside logic for political convenience. A caller to the Howie Carr radio show summed it up as "These people wear winter clothes in the summer".
Characterized by men in ponytails, sandals with socks, and 1.20.09 Bush's Last Day bumperstickers. Often seen at global warming marches that take place during snowstorms.

uncle sam, if you look at any of the "nice" towns (Bedford, Lexington, Wellesley), they have town centers or downtowns more or less the way Parenti described. Of course, that would never happen in Billerica. People in Billerica like the town center the way it is...which is why it will never be a place people want to go.
If you ever tried to park or love traffic and the taxes the residents pay in those snobatoriums Billerica made a smart decision last night.

About time Casey was thrown out - he should be thrown off the Planning Board. He's a condescending egotistical individual that has done more on the Planning Board to hurt this town that can be imagined. His stubbornness has put the safety of kids at risk on Biagiotti Way. He led the charge there saying we would win - and we LOST.
Pay Attention more closely Casey did not put the children at risk. It was the spineless Town Attorney who advised the Board of Appeals to vote in favor of the project and did not care to fight for children. He is in the pocket of special interests.

For those who thought that this articleand the proposed "vision" was a "tiny step" in the right direction and are wondering why it lost, please note this statement on "moonbats!" It explains everthing.
Here is the best example of special interests, moonbats calling others moonbats in the name of special interests.

. This is a ridiculous statement about bob Casey. He is a person of integrity and one of the few people in Billerica who stands up for what he believes in and knows what he is talking about. If we had more people like him on other boards we would not have the overdeveloped 40B projects in town. Most of these comments against him are political in natural anyway.

since when is a proposal to provide more development opportunities to landowners in a particular downtown considered to be a 'leftist' idea. And how exactly can 91 people in a room of 180 be considered to be 'moonbats' who were shot down by the '89 member majority'?

There is one thing that kept common sense from prevailing in Billerica last night, and that is the ancient state zoning act that requires a 2/3 vote for forward-thinking members of a community to put forward good ideas and change bad development patterns.

The governor has a bill before the legislature that would change zoning votes to a real majority vote. Enact that bill, and this good idea would have passed.

Or even better, give people time to debate the issues, and 30 people in the room who didn't understand the advantages may have come around to support it.

Mickey. we are still waiting for you to point out what Casey has done to hurt Billerica.

Time to put up or shut up!

You Home Depot guys are the ones that want to hurt Billerica.

BTW does anyone ever believe Home Depot would expand to Billerica in this economy.

Many of us know Bob Casey as the guy who helped battle the Home Depot development at the mall. Whether you were for it or against it you have to admit that he worked hard for the cause and that he was very helpful to the neighborhoods most impacted by the development.

But, how many of you remember that it was Bob Casey as a member of the School Committee that helped turn around the sad school system that we had back then? He was part of the school committee that brought in Dr. Sharkey and Dr. Calabrese and made great strides in building a school system that goes far beyond what we previously had. Thank you Bob, keep up the good work!

Casey is an absolute egotistical pompous obstructionist. He promised TM that the Planning Board (commonly known as the "Planning to be sued Board")would take care of the safety issues on Biagiotti Way and he urged a warrant article be voted down. It was and here we are months later without any mitigation from the developer. That turned out to be a great deal for the developer and a crappy deal for our kids safety. Thanks to Casey. He's "anti" everything and doesn't offer positive solutions. The Planning Board has become a joke. We've built a reputation as a town that does not work with businesses in the permitting process. He treats our Town Planner like a two year old. Pull your head out of the sand, Casey has not contributed a thing but negativity. But he;s tied in with a political crowd - notice how they are circling the wagons around him to protect and defend him.

Egotistic you must be confusing him, with Correnti.

So you are saying the Planning Board was never sued, sorry wrong.

How dare a regular non business aligned person serve on the Planning Board.

Casey topped the ticket big time when he twice ran.

Maybe the average citizen thinks he's doing a good job. Maybe because he's won't sell out the towns for a few pieces of silver, people like him.

Go Bob Go, Billericas future is more important than a few pieces of silver.
