John: With all due respect to you, I disagree with you. I think the county did the right thing with the private fireworks and the Parks and Recreation group who was sponsoring the Lykins Park cancelled as well for the right reasons. It was noted in the Sun that the venue which was honoring the veterans did not want them to be exposed to the extreme heat, and the parking in a grass field would be too dangerous. How much of a chance is anyone willing to take especially after watching the devestation in Colorado with the fires? We do not play Russian Roulette do we? If there was a 10% chance of a fire that would destroy property wouldn't that be too much of a risk? Especially when it can be rescheduled which it will be when this burn ban is over. I think the county did the right thing. The good news is that if we have to see fireworks, we can all go to Lexington or any one of the other cities that are still having a boom-boom.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and it happens to be yours and city council is wrong. If Scott county, Fayette county and Woodford county have deemed it safe enough to have the fireworks you think winchester would do the same. We have plenty of areas in which it could have been held but instead they cancelled. Big deal if they reschedule, it's no longer the fourth.

Not city council John, it was the County Judge, Henry Branham, who gave the order upon the advice of the Clark County Fire Chief. You have to respect their opinios as they have seen more of the destruction that fires can cause than you and I would ever care to see. I realize it is the 4th but perhaps next year they can have an even bigger one! Thanks for the opinions. It is nice to have an intelligent conversation without getting mean on both our ends.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion too but the fact is the fireworks land over several hundred acres depending on the wind drift and it just can't be done safely. The last thing the politicians want to do is cancel the fireworks show because it makes everyone mad at them but they made the right call. And it isn't the 4th anyway its the 3rd, and and I don't care if they had it on leap day people will show up for a fireworks display.

I can't believe the city council and the parks dept. did not foresee the rain that is apparently preparing to come down. Happy Independance Day to all.

Fireworks ban in towns everywhere. I think if caught a ticket should be the least of the problem, perhaps 300-500.00 fine for the first offense-1000.00 for second offense then perhaps a night or two in jail for each offense after that. This should not be a fine you are "subject" to it should be a mandatory no matter who you know fine that is strictly enforced.

To those who disagree with the fireworks ban, just wait until your house is ablaze. There are drunk people in my neighborhood setting off all kinds of fireworks, UNsafely. The police would have a field day if they were here right now.

Igniting any type of fireworks around , near, or close to any thing dried out and yes, you are asking for a serious situation then.

Don't sit where you are under fire like an open target. Zoom in and take one or two of the attackers out of the game.
